As is his custom, though, Chuck only presents half the picture. If Marshall actually makes a few hundred thousand from the bowl pot, will that offset the expenses of having all their teams compete over the massive geographic footprint that encompasses C-USA as opposed to the relatively small MAC footprint?
My point is this... Marshall was in C-USA last year too, and thus eligible to share in the spoils then. The athletic program still had to take $5 million from the school's general operating funds just to pay the bills. Would the difference in travel expenses for MAC participation vs. C-USA and the bowl payouts have reduced that subsidy? It would be interesting to know.
Marshall is just fine in the conference they are in. They've never complained too much about travel and certainly never asked for scheduling help from the league as there are enough teams back this way to minimize far west travel. That'll likely improve with the new teams added.

That's right, they're getting some new teams. Do you know which teams are joining the league?
Conference USA announced Friday that it is adding five new schools in 2013.
Commissioner Britton Banowsky said Charlotte, Florida International, Louisiana Tech, North Texas and UT-San Antonio will join the league in all sports, with Charlotte's new football program joining in 2015.
Charlotte is rejoining Conference USA after several years in the Atlantic 10. Louisiana Tech has been in the WAC since 2001, and UTSA will play in the WAC next year before joining C-USA. FIU and North Texas will be leaving the Sun Belt Conference.
FIU, Florida Atlantic, Middle Tennessee, UTSA, LA Tech and North Texas have already competed in CUSA in football for 2013.
Old Dominion is set to join in football in 2014 (all sports 2013), and Charlotte in 2015
East Carolina is leaving to join the AAC in 2014.
Just wondering... are you excited about the prospect of playing the likes of FIU, FL Atlantic, Middle Tennessee, San Antonio, LA Tech, and North Texas week in and week out?

I'm indifferent about the new conference mates. Not really a Herd fan. I like to see them do well, but I've always been emotionally invested as a WVU fan.
