Kids Spurn Jamie Oliver's Healthier Food - CBS News

Jamie is trying to do what Barney Fife always tried to do: "nip it in the bud." You folks need to get your kids eating healthier so they can have the same type body as your very famous resident: Deputy Bernard Fife.

He was the best.
The kids are spurning Shepherds Pie and sausage and bean casserole. Thats the kind of stuff that we eat for dinner all the time.

I believe the reason they spurn that type of food would be because the parents don't fix home cooked meals. My kids take into school fresh soups in thermos cans, venison salami all sorts of home cooked meals. A lot of their friends go "Ewwww!!".. My son always laughs and says "My mom can cook, sorry yours can't", lol. (Dad coached 'em a little, lol).

Man do I feel sorry for the families that don't take the time to actually sit down around the table and eat supper. It's the best time to talk about your day, enjoy a good meal, relax and be a family. I think a lot of these kids spurning those fresh meals are missing out on a lot more than good food

Amen to that Three...I am fortunate enough to be able to spend a ton of time with my kiddos since they are both homeschooled. But, we still love to sit together at the end of the day and dad gets to catch up on all the goings on in the family. I was raised by a single mom who had to work all the time. I know what its like to not have that connection with a solid family. I'm sure thats why it is so important for us to have that time. When you get them involved in the cooking process, it helps a lot too. We started exposing them to different foods from the start. And now, they will eat anything! From Kim Chee to Gizzards...lol

Actually, Mississippi - and, generally speaking, most majority-AA counties throughout the South - have higher obesity rates than Huntington, WV - largely due to the high fat content of traditional AA cuisine/soul food (that's not to say that healthy soul food doesn't exist/can't be prepared, or that one should never enjoy the good old unhealthy stuff). Jamie Oliver probably just didn't want to get into potentially sticky, potentially politically incorrect stuff in his 'work.' (I'm approximately 1/2 AA [because my black mother is undoubtedly not entirely West African, being fairly light] myself, so I can say this. )

But, yeah, obesity is becoming a huge (no pun intended) problem worldwide, and it's less and less frequently going to be associated with particular nations, races, etc.

Congrats to the team behind Jamie Oliver for making Huntington out to be a very beautiful city. He is portraying the landscape and city itself very positively through the footage being shown on the show.

Hopefully this will allow others with health consiousness and concern to migrate to the area.

I think it is a beautiful town.
