Sounds like public support is there for a new ice rink and even the return of hockey. Here's another article on the subject from Huntington News:

As a follow up, the Big Sandy Arena in Huntington is closing this summer for the planned renovations. It sounds like they are going to fix the floor to be ready to bring back ice should the opportunity arise. Here's an article:

The renovations at the Big Sandy Arena began this week. Should look nice once done and hopefully they'll bring the ice back and all of the things that come with it.

The arena seats have now been replaced. They are then moving to the conference center and the plaza in front of the arena. No word on if the ice will be replaced yet. From the full article, the arena hopes to add more shows now and SMG management also hopes to bring in 10-15 additional ahows to the Keith Albee each year. It also speaks of how the arena brings in > 200,000 people to Huntington each year. Great investment for sure!
