Default Black Professional 20's-Fort Payne, AL ???

Hi Everyone,

So hence from the screen name I am from Louisiana. I have been offered a great position in Fort Payne, AL and am set to start in a few weeks. I have searched this site as well as many others and I can't seem to find any information on the best places in Fort Payne to live. The recurring theme seems to be "the city sucks but it's pretty." Understandable, but I really don't want any long commutes to work. I'm not too concerned with how boring the city is. I am a twenty-something African-American female so I have determined there probably aren't a lot of entertainment options for me in Fort Payne. I drove from the Huntsville airport to my interview so I'm assuming I could find an outlet there. I just want to be able to get to work on time.
I really want to know what area of the city is "nicest". I am a stickler for clean and pretty so please no rundown areas.
Any info would be MUCH appreciated. I am traveling to the area as much as I can but 9 hour drives aren't that great. I'll be renting until I am familiar.

Thanks Y'all

Lookout Mountain Alabama - Lookout Mountain Parkway - Lookout Mtn. AL

You might try doing a search on Fort Payne. I don't believe we have anyone who lives there who posts frequently. It is a small city. I only know one person who lived out in the country and she ended moving back to FL for various personal reasons.

I've only driven through Ft Payne 5 or 6 times so I'm no expert. But there are a lot of pretty areas around there if you are into nature but could be pretty boring for a young, single professional. However, Chattanooga is probably 45 minutes away, which is a nice little city with good entertainment options. Atlanta is about 2 hrs away. Birmingham is 1.5 hours away (maybe a little less). Huntsville is probably 1 hr 15 minutes. So if you are willing to have a short commute but regularly drive a bit for entertainment, you can probably make the most of it.

We drove around just a little bit last Saturday looking for an estate sale in the area north of Main Street (Alabama Avenue & 5th thru 9th Streets). I'm certain it wasn't the nicest neighborhood in town, but it certainly looked like acceptable housing to us. Viewing any of the satellite map sites will reveal that Ft. Payne is indeed a very compact town. If you could endure another trip, I believe you could see almost every neighborhood in the town in a long day. Wanting the "nicest" neighborhood in town might even be a plus in this day and time, since some of those homes are being rented out on short-term leases while the owners are waiting for sales to bounce back. A really good RE agent would be a plus in your situation; but, alas, I know no one in that market. Ole Heritage Homes currently has 58 featured listings (with pics) on their site--you might want to take a quick look at them. Good luck.
