Browse many of the other threads for places to live, I think that has been covered. I'll just list some of my favorite things about the area. I hear people complain about Huntsville not having anything to do, but IMO, if you are bored, it is your own fault. There are tons of really nice things here and within a short drive. The bar scene is a little weak, but it is getting better quickly. OK, here's my best of list.
Big Spring Park is a wonderful city park located downtown. It's beautiful and hosts lots of concerts, art festivals, contains the Art Museum... There are free concerts in the park every Monday during the summer and free movies in the park on Friday nights in the summer. Space and Rocket Center. Our claim to fame and home to Space Camp. Lots of NASA (particularly Apollo era) and Army Redstone Research Arsenal equipment on display. IMAX movie theatre. Monte Sano State Park/Land Trust is approximately 3000 combined acres on top of the ridge just a few miles east of downtown, but 1000 ft higher in elevation. Lots of great hiking and mountain biking trails are up there. Plus a lodge, campgrounds, cabins, observatory... Green Mountain Nature Trail is in south Huntsville on top of Green Mountain. It is a great walking trail around a small lake that has a wonderful picnic pavillion. Walk through the Twickenham historic district. Twickenham is a district of mansions dating from the early 1800s to early 1900s that are still private residences. The homes are absolutely gorgeous and perfectly maintained. Each Christmas, 4 of the owners volunteer to open their homes to the public for tours. They usually have a similar home and gardens tour in the Spring. Burritt on the Mountain. A restored mansion on top of Monte Sano overlooking Huntsville. It is open for tours. Also, there are numerous 1800s cabins that have relocated up there and a small village has been constructed. They have concerts up there occassionally as well. BBQ. I NEED my BBQ fix occassionally. The best IMO are Thomas Pit for ribs and Greenbrier (the old one at the corner of Greenbrier Rd and the old Highway 20 west of Huntsville) for hush puppies and pulled pork. |

Public hunting and fishing areas abound throughout North Alabama. Minor league baseball, hockey, and arena football games. Great oppotunities to continue your education at local colleges and universities. Huntsville Speedway. Boating on local lakes, canoeing the Sipsey, Elk and Flint rivers. Skeet and trap shooting at Big Sky and Sharon Johnson Park. Trade and Craft shows at the Civic Center. Auctions at the various antique/collectibles/equipment auction houses in the area. Garage sales, flea markets, and estate sales all over North Alabama. Harrison Brothers, Lewters, and Reid hardware stores. The Tennis Center, the ice skating facility behind the baseball stadium, swimming at the Natatorium or the Williams Avenue (?) facility. Just a few of my favorite things!

Want to check out your area. Would love to see some pics of what your downtown area Huntsville looks like, especially the recreation areas that include lakes, parks and mountain areas. We have been to the space center while passing through Huntsville years ago. I remember the rolling hills and that it was a attractive area driving down from Tennessee. Thanks all.....

A lot of the people that lived there with me back in 2000 were in school and busy! Otherwise we were working too much to be bored. You'll enjoy the city as long as you aren't expecting Dallas or Atlanta. Take up hunting and a martial art.
