If the house was empty for any length of time then that might why the snake felt comfortable in the pond. The drought is probably a contributing factor. Once your dogs are running around the yard, that should help keep them from hanging around.

Rattlers , Copperheads, and Water Moccasins , We have them , but if you was to encounter any of these , your probably somewhere you shouldn't be . The most common snake you will occasionally see will be either a Black Rat Snake or a Chicken Snake , both of these are sorta good to have around specially if you have a country setting or a barn , they tend to keep down rodents an such , but will almost always evade the area when humans are present . I'm in the lawn and Landscape business and I rarely see any snakes other than a harmless Green Garden Snake. One other note , if you have a Black Rat Snake living on your property, you will probably never see a poisonous snake , Blake snakes are very territorial and will drive out most other snakes.

Default It's All Relative

Although I've heard of the occasional sizeable timber rattler in N. Alabama, Texas, as usual, comes away with the bragging rights.

Try putting mothballs out around your perimeter of the yard. snakes dont seem to like the smell and will avoid them. the problem is you have to keep an eye on them especially after a rainstorm as they will melt

hi, the lawn care people have told me that they have disposed of my recent snake problem. i was told it was a copper head not a cotton mouth. in the upcoming weeks when i bring the k-9s to their new home i will feel better about their safety. they are loyal friends but are never accused of being the brightest of creatures..

If you are living out in the country - and Toney qualifies - get yourself a good mouser (i.e., a cat that likes to catch critters). This will help keep snakes, mice, etc. away. . . I think the Cottonmouth/Water Moccasin is an aggressive snake. Check with your NEW local veterinarian. I think I remember seeing that there is a vaccine out for snake bites for your pets. . . Also VERY IMPORTANT, educate yourself about the Brown Recluse spider. We moved several years ago from the area. My daughters are still in the habit of turning shoes upside down and bumping them. And no, they've never seen one, but it's a good habit to get into.
