Neither spider will attack you. I don't know about BR's, but black widows are very shy and passive -- you pretty much have to mash them for them to bite you. Since they hide, all you have to do is be cautious when sticking your hands somewhere you can't see. Under and behind rocks, etc.

Even so, you can always tell a BW web when you see one -- they are very messy.

Having had the experience of sticking my hands in garden gloves and finding a resident the hard way, I keep mine in a ziplock bag now. No, nothing dangerous was in the glove, but it was NOT a pleasant experience!

Not me; some generic brown spider; not dangerous but sure scared the snot out of me.

IMHO.. the Brown Recluse bite is the worst of the 2 spiders. They aren't aggressive but they will bite you if you happen to put your hands, feet or legs in something they are in.
