We are moving to Huntsville in June (South Huntsville), and were curious what options are available for our 11 year old son? He is a bit old for daycare, but not quite old enough to be left alone all day by himself. (maybe summer of 2012)

We were hoping this would be a good time for him to make some new friends prior to starting a new school this fall.

Does the Huntsville City School System have a program for older kids during the summer? Also, does anyone recommend the YMCA? We are fairly close to the Y on Weatherly.

Thanks in advance,

Day Camp! YMCA has Day Camp all summer long for a reasonable rate, but there are also day camp options all over the city - he could even do several. Sci-Quest, Burritt on the Mountain, Botanical Garden, Fantasy Playhouse, etc. all have various Day Camps. Some offer before and after care if necessary for working parents.

Pine Ridge Day Camp is also super fun - more expensive but there you are looking at horseback riding, wide open spaces, etc, and bus service to transport to and from camp (which is about a half hour southwest of Huntsville).

I live in Arab City School district in Marshall county (30 minutes south) and they have what they call Extended Summer. They go on a field trip every week, tons of fun and activities and to the city pool. You may want to check with the school system your child will be attending. Here, it is only $14 a day.....

There are some good suggestions here from previous posters. My kids did some day camp activities last summer at SciQuest and loved it. If your child is interested in a particular sport, you may be to find a summer camp / clinic. I know that the Randolph School sponsored several of these last summer, and a friend's son went to a soccer camp that I think was sponsored by UAH. A lot of local churches also have programs like summer day camps, vacation bible school, etc, which you probably can find more info for online.

I always thought if I had the money (collateral for loan), I would get one of the properties on Ripple Ln. (there's always one for sale), and turn it into a camp (horseback riding and cleaning the stables, gardening and cooking the crop, self-sufficiency and practical skills), all in the backyard of their parents (Hampton Cove). I had a dream!
