Ok, please forgive my ignorance here - but this is a PUBLIC university, right? How do they justify paying a coach 4.7 million? Shouldn't that money go to - I dunno - THE UNIVERSITY? Really, I would be *embarrassed* to accept millions of dollars from a public institution of higher education, considering how high tuitions are getting and how many students and graduates must scrounge to buy overpriced books and pay off student loans.

I am shocked there is not a cap on that. Maybe someone can enlighten me as to how it is privatized in some roundabout way? I don't get it. What a racket.

I make 1800 per month disability(bad back) and I get 400 per month for food stamps. I own a lawn care company and make 80k per year(non taxed) from that. I also grow Hydrophonic weed in my basement because the lawn care biz falls off during the winter months.

I would like to thank you all for supplementing my lifesyle.

Funny how I was reading this article, before I jumped on C-D. Re: Dr. Williams resigning (at a time two articles, yours included, published what they make)

Dr. David Williams will step down as president of the University of Alabama in Huntsville | al.com

This is why (from Forbes):

3 Louisiana State Univ. 92,400 $68,819,806.00
4
Univ. of Florida 88,548 $68,715,750.00
5

12
Vanderbilt Univ. 41,448 $14,152,061.00

Also from Forbes, Alabama's football profit was $40,766,391.

Alabama's football program alone makes enough money to fund itself and all of the money sucking sports that the University has.

I'm not justifying how out of whack our priorities are as a society, but most big time coach's salary actually comes from non-public funds. I'm not sure in the case of Saban but most of the time, the university is paying a small fraction, maybe $250,000, the rest is made up with endorsements, media deals, apparel sales that go into the athletic department budget.

Jenn, not only does the football program pay for itself, its profits support many other sports (including women's sports), even a stipend to Million Dollar Band. The recent stadium expansion was paid for with Tide Pride and other fees before the first scaffold went up.

As rnc said, most of Saban's (and Chizik's for that matter) salary is made up private endorsements, fees for his TV show etc etc. That big figure is touted a lot, but the university pays a great deal less as actual salary. I saw the breakdown not long ago...you might google it to find out. I think the figure the university pays is closer to half a million.

In my view, Saban is worth every penny!

Unfortunately, I had seen something similar to this on CNN titled "Alabama: #45 in education and #1 in paying coach. I know they're not tied to the same cash flow at all, but it is still kinda sad. It's only our fault though, we treat the man like a god.

I wonder how that salary holds up against his pro coaching salary before he screwed over the Dolphins.
