Rule #1 in that business is to NEVER believe the customer with such excuse, but just open the engine.
It is so easy to see that the oil was in the engine before or after it quit working.
Really? I'm sure they have employees ready to do this and understand what they're looking at or even know how to open an engine up

About all the generator brands state in their warranty that in such cases the generator has to be send to either the distributor or a appointed point of service.
There it takes about 10 minutes to inspect the oil and the bearings in the engine.
Places as Lowe's, Home Depot, Advance Auto Parts, Tractor Supply, are only sales points and not appointed service points.
The only way that you can handle a return with the sales points is when the generator was not filled up with oil and gas, and was as such not ready to be started.
It is always helpfull to read the warranty paperwork when one buys such equipment.

The usual text is like this :
Do not return the unit to the place of purchase

Contact XXX's Technical Service and XXX will troubleshoot any issue via phone or e-mail. If the problem is not corrected by this method, XXX will, at its option, authorize evaluation, repair or replacement of the defective part or component at a XXX Service Center. XXX will provide you with a case number for warranty service. Please keep it for future reference. Repairs or replacements without prior authorization, or at an unauthorized repair facility, will not be covered by this warranty.

The only exeptions are the Honda and Yamaha products that you buy at the Honda or Yamaha dealership.
In that case the Honda or Yamaha dealer is the point of sales and the appointed point of service.
