Default Autism/School/Madison County

Hello,
I will be relocating to Madison County in the next few months. I have a 14 year old son with autism whom I currently homeschool. (Don't believe all the awesome hype about NC programs!)
Because I'm so out of the public school loop, I don't have anyone that has had dealings with, or knows about Special Education services, specifically for children with autism, in Madison County.
I'm sure, like here in NC, the county is huge and encompasses many school choices. I suspect we'll be centrally located.

Are there any autism-specific schools or programs? He'll be entering high school this coming school year.
Any specific places to stay away from?

Thanks for your input!
LC

An unfortunate bad timing for your family.
Hsv City Schools are in financial trouble right now (plus other troubles), and among the things to go (downsize) were the Special Ed services.

From the comments I read, special ed. parents are unhappy with the direction this department is going. Some are going the private or homeschool way because of it.

I would suggest following the reports on al.com. and somehow getting in touch with some of the commenters (parents) to get their perspective, rather than buying into what the HSV Schools tell you.

Some of the townhall meetings are broadcast on the ETV (channel 17 Comcast).

There are three school systems in Madison County as well as a multitude of private schools. (I'm not aware of any private schools that have services for autistic children..doesn't mean there aren't any, but I've never heard of them.)

You will also want to check with Madison City Schools and Madison County Schools.

I know there is an large and active home-school group in Madison County. I'm sure you can find something via google.

Good luck with the move and I hope you find some assistance.
