Just a suggestion... Have you tried a no-kill animal shelter?

Where I live, my vet wanted $177+ to see a cat (I inherited him) who was bit on his ears during a cat fight. They became infected rather quickly.

I went to our local no-kill shelter and explained what happened. They gave me antibiotics for him. Cost?? $9.00. They also do low cost spay-neuter and vaccines.

Hopefully there is something like that near you. It's worth checking into.

Wow! That's great.

One of the local vets where I live, I swear, they are the money hungriest bunch. I picked up a kitten off the road near the vets... he was sitting in the middle of the road and had been hit. All the meat had been ripped off of his tail and he was in shock. He was probably no more than 7-8 wks old at the most (what the heck was he doing out?!), so I got the kitten, and drove him to that vets office because it was nearby and I thought they cared. Well, when I got there they said they would take care of it if I volunteered $100.00 toward it's cost and that they would adopt it out to someone other than me in case it was my kitten and I was rusing them to get the kitten cared for for free. So, I gave them the $100.00 and left. I understand that they can't just care for everyone's animals for free but my God.

I would like to bump this post because I never found an answer to the original question that applies to our family since we have dogs and cats.
Anyway, we recently moved here and have a nice little mixture of our rescue kids, cats and dogs. Back at our old home we had a great vet, money and care. We found a great vet, care-wise here but the cost is crazy....I would hope there is at least one vet clinic here that gives good care at a reasonable rate....any suggestions? We are in Madison City but I am willing to drive 15 +/- miles.
Thanks!

My sister recently had a mishap with a pup in her house and it got it's leg broken.
She took it to a Dr. Jones and I believe she said it was at North Alabama Animal Clinic in Hazel Green.
The doc set the leg, put a cast on it (not just a wrap), used anesthesia, put a cone on it and gave her some meds to take home and her bill was $160.00. I know the pup was tiny and a bigger dog would probably have cost more, but believe me when I tell you that my vet would have charged at least triple that for the pup.
It's not terribly far from Madison and if that charge is indicative of the other charges from that vet then I would say it was worth the drive.
The initial question probably wasn't actually answered because none of us actually know a vet with reasonable charges around.

Yes, pretty much all the Madison City vets are very high.
Thank you for the info, I will certainly give them a call.
And I hope the puppy is doing well :-)

Thanks! Last I heard he was doing great. I'll see him next wkend. He's one of the cutest little things I've ever seen. Beautiful little foxlike face.
Hope that vet works out for you.

We go to a place in south huntsville, and for our rat terrier's annual shots, it is always around 250.00. Which is ridiculous. When you find a cheap place, let me know!

I pay $50 dollars for my dogs shots in Arab. That is for rabies, kennel cough and DHPP. Now they only do the shots and check the dog over but no lab work. Actually if you ve an older dog who has had the DHPP shots for several years you probably don't need the DHPP but every couple of years because it builds up. In FL they use to check the tethers but that cost as much as the shots if not more. My dog did not need the shots for 3 years. Kennel cough is not needed unless you board your dog, take to groomers or take it to doggie parks.

Not sure how cheap you are looking for but I use Dr. Jones in Hazel Green with North AL Animal Clinic. He is so kind and gentle with animals. My dog almost died a few years back and Dr. Jones was so sweet to him and kept trying options until we finally saved his life. I definitely recommend going outside Huntsville and even Madison county to find cheaper vets.

I am a huge fan of Whitworth Animal Clinic on Hwy 72. They also do boarding and they have always been wonderful to our dog. I think they are pretty reasonable on prices too...
