Charles, thanks for getting involved, I'm proud that you're (going to be) here.

Glenn Watson is a great public servant - he is running in the GOP primary for Madison County Commission District 2 against incumbent Faye Dyer and Bob Wagner (Madison City Council). There are no Democrats running for the seat, so the June 3 primary is pretty much the election for District 2.

Note that I'm glad I don't live in that district, because I like and respect all of them.

33458 - well, I would say drive past Chapman Middle sometime to get an idea of Lee's future, but school's out for Summer. It's almost all black and located in a white neighborhood. Whites have fled the school.

Lee is past the 'tipping point' mentioned in the Times articles above, the concept of which does imply a bias against blacks in general. I don't know if a school has ever been brought back from that point - I think the City is hoping that a new facility helps - but IMO it's just repackaging the existing situation. Also, the new school will be further alienated from the NE white community by being on Meridian (ties Lee to AAMU).

IMO the City also hopes that building a new Lee might make it easier to build a new SE High School.

It's no comfort to note that people much smarter than me don't have answers.

Where have the white students fled to (from the black school in the white neighborhood)? The text below outlines what can be done. Not sure if it outlines what can't be done. That is, a black student can apply to transfer to a majority white school. That is pretty clear. Can a white student also do that? For example, can a white student at Grissom transfer to Huntsville (majority white)?

From the Huntsville City Schools Handbook 2007-2008, http://www.hsv.k12.al.us/dept/merts/...s/handbook.pdf
A percentage of race transfer is as follows: To enhance desegregation, a student of ANY RACE may apply to attend a school where there are fewer students of his/her race.

Students granted a percentage of race transfer ARE NOT ELIGIBLE to participate in sports for the first academic school year the transfer is granted according to the Alabama High School Athletic Association.

The school district shall permit a student attending a school in which the student’s race is in the MAJORITY to attend a school in which the student’s race would then be in the MINORITY.

Students granted a percentage of race transfer ARE NOT ELIGIBLE to participate in sports for the first academic school year the transfer is granted according to the Alabama High School Athletic Association.

Private school, home school, move out of the zone.

Note that both Grissom and HHS are majority white - so no transfer. If you mean can a white kid at majority white Grissom transfer to majority black Johnson, I don't know, but I guess so.

I know that a white kid at majority black Johnson can't transfer to Grissom, but that a black kid could try. But since Grissom is over-capacity, the transfer probably wouldn't be approved. IIRC the transfers are on a space-available basis.

This article sort of has the "101" version of this, basic information, current status, what possibilities exist, etc.

Charles, FYI, al.com - Everything Alabama has some good articles but unfortunately they don't leave them up but a week or two. To retrieve after that, you have to pay a fee . They do leave some "special reports" up permanently.

Must be something like that. For some reason, the Times doesn't let you know that you must pay a fee. It justs sends back a blank page.

I'll figure away around it.

By saying FLED you allude to whites running from blacks. A perfect example of ingrained racism. Welcome to the South.

Default Termite Bond expires?

I'm on the Sentricon system with Cooks. Sentricon has these green units which hold bait (really just sticks of pine) that are placed in a perimeter around your house. Every 3 months, my guy comes out and checks the bait for termites and replaces it. If they find termites, they locate the termites, treat and repair damage as needed. If you have termite damage and they didn't stop it, it's their responsibility to fix it. Once a year, they do a whole house inspection.

Cost is based on the linear feet of the exterior of the home, and it's not high. My house is 2150 square feet and I pay $87 per quarter, which includes everything termite related.

Other kinds of pest services are also available, but not really needed unless you have a problem. There are numerous products on the market like Home Defender which do basically the same thing as a pest "service": repel and kill insects entering the home. They are easy to use and a cheaper than a pro.

Once you have an infestation of something, though, it's generally easier and cheaper to have a pro handle it. There are so many different chemicals and poisons you'll spend a fortune trying to figure out which of 20 different formulas kills your particular pest ant species. If they don't fix it the first time, they'll come out and do it again at no charge.
Our termite bond was for 20 years and our house is now 19 yrs. old. What will happen about that bond next year? Will they make us start over with a costly procedure? I'm almost afraid to ask them!
