Hi everyone! I've been lurking on and off for a couple of months, and I figured I might as well create an account.

My and family and I currently live in the greater Washington, D.C. area and we are looking to move to Huntsville next year. We've taken quite a few trips to the area over the last three years and we've finally decided on a home in Lake Forest. We're really excited and will close in February.

I'm happy to be here and hope to learn lots from you "seasoned" people in Huntsville!

What brings you this way - BRAC?

Welcome!

No, no BRAC. We were researching best places to raise families, within a day's drive to extended family (since they're still in the DC area), good cost of living, and a place where both our companies have a pretty decent presence. We found it all--and more--in Huntsville!

Plus, I always wanted to live near mountains!

That's pretty fortunate that both of you were able to transfer your job to Huntsville!

Yes, it's pretty exciting! Do you have a favorite place in the Huntsville area? We've only just learned about Dublin Park and Bridge Street on the last couple of trips we took down there.

What are some things on the "road less traveled" down there?

Hi Pam, and almost welcome to the area! :-)

Here's a thread that has local and sorta local (or day trip) places to visit with many of them off the beaten path.

Compared to D.C., all the roads are less traveled here!

I actually did the opposite move a little over a year ago. I lived my whole life in north Alabama, so it was a good change for me. My whole family still lives in Alabama. Here are 3 things that popped in my head that are minor differences.
1. There just really is not a grocery store that compares to Wegmans.
2. You have to either go to Nashville or Birmingham to get your Chipotle fix.
3. I could eat Middle Eastern kabobs for the rest of my life and die happy, but unless things changed recently, you cannot find that in Huntsville area.
