My husband and I have just returned from Alabama visiting there from NJ. We really like the area and think we might like to retire there. Houses and property taxes are much more affordable there than NJ and the area is beautiful. We would love to know more about it such as the best areas and where to go shopping, etc. Any comments or info is welcomed.

Well, you're talking about North Alabama and the questions are fairly broad. Best areas for what? If you prefer city, suburbs, shopping, then I would recommend Huntsville/Madison area. If you would prefer the country and driving in to shop, then, well... anywhere else in N. Alabama.. lol. Really, every person can have a different answer but knowing some of what you would be looking for would help.

We just had another member from FL come up here to check out NE AL for retirement purposes. They liked the Ft. Payne area. Mentone is close to Ft. Payne and has the only ski resort in AL. AFAIK..

As writerwife stated it really depends on what you are looking for in a retirement home. We have a member from LI who moved to Guntersville. They love it here. They have a nice house with a pool and a lake view.

Depending on your retirement if you have a pension it may tax free. Property taxes are low compared to many places. HOI is not bad considering how much damage was done in AL last year.

If you are interested in Mentone you can do a search as there are a few threads about that area
