Southlander - I mean that Atlanta is not in the TN River watershed, so our alligators won't migrate there. I don't know if ATL has alligators or not.

OK, I see now. Unless somebody imported them to control beavers, probably no gators in the ATL.

My son and I saw that alligator a couple summers ago (2010?) when we were out canoeing in that lake just after he bought his canoe. Coming from Florida, seeing alligators in a lake isn't that big a deal. As long as you don't feed them, they'll pretty much leave you alone.

About 15 years or so ago, I took a walk south of the MSFC building 4755 along the (I think) Indian Creek that runs behind 4755. Besides finding some interesting underground bunker-type structure, I came upon a alligator's nest right next to the creek. There were a bunch of broken up gator egg shells on top of the next; they looked less than a month old at that time. I was very wary of a possible momma gator watching out for her babies! But the biggest problem was the dang ticks I found when I got home, boy they got me good!

Which lake did you canoe on?

I think the gator should have been left in the pond. However, around here folks panic when nature's predators come anywhere near a neighborhood - an alligator pretty-much demands a SWAT-team response .

I remember, back when the tornadoes took out the power for a week, a woman called-in to a local radio station to report a fox running wild in the Edgewater community. I've never laughed so hard in my life.

Well - alligators are not native to North Alabama. We - TVA messed with nature here.
Unlike down in FL, young alligators have less predators here. They can - and have acclimate with our colder winters.

I would understand if people are upset when they see an alligator - if they they were in the middle of a subdivision - where small kids/pets are around. Alligators are simply not naturally part of the eco system.

If they were in Wheeler or in some wildlife preserve, there is absolutely no reason to get upset.

However - with a fox (or even a coyote), that is definitely funny. I would have run out with my camera.

I lived in CA - and when we have a mountain lion spotted in the office complex, everyone rushes in doors - and animal control is called. If the mountain lion was spotted in the mountains, this is absolutely normal.

The lake just south of Edgewater off of Zeirdt. We saw the alligator near the dam at the south end of the lake. GPS: approximately 34.663721 -86.724899

That would be the southern part of Lady Ann Lake in Edgewater.

GPS: 34.663721 -86.724899 - Google Maps

I actually saw what looked like the head of an alligator in the lake myself.
You never see one on the banks though ... at least, not in the daytime.
