Drove by Westlawn Middle School a few days ago and noticed they are now the Warriors, when and why did this change? They used to be the Tigers, just wondering and this may be old news but I just now noticed it.

The National Association for the Advancement of Tigers protested the name as insulting. The new name and associated logo (American Indian in full war bonnet) was chosen instead.

When I was growing up, Westlawn were the Tigers and colors were red and black. My middle school, Stone Middle were the Confederates (yep) and were green and gold. It was the big middle school rivalry of West Huntsville. Stone later dropped the politically incorrect mascot for the lame-o "Gators" name. After Stone closed, the two schools combined on the Westlawn campus. Once combined they adopted Stone colors and Westlawn name. But I guess they've combined and compromised and changed name and colors altogether. Not exactly sure why.

Westlawn, is part of a massive turn around grant. Most likely the name/mascot change came as a result of trying to change the negative image surrounding the school. This will probably happen when Davis Hills and Ed White merge next year and to J. O. Johnson when the new school is built. Just another smoke screen where the super and the board are trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.
