Just goes to show you, there are a lot of factors to consider and different factors are more important to each individual.

We've made jokes about it costing the most...interesting to know that it is. With the defense industry using a large % of the flights, the airlines know they can charge whatever they want and the gov't will pay for it.

Totally agree with this statement. Case in point, a few years ago I was going on a businese trip to between Washington D.C. and Baltimore. I could fly "major contracted airlines" to Reagan National airport for a little over $1,000 round trip, or I could take a "non-contracted airline", e.g., Air Tran to Baltimore for a little over $250 round trip. My secretary told me I could fly the more expensive fare since it was the "contracted fare", but I just could not see wasting money like this, even if it was not my own money. I chosed to fly to Baltimore then drive down instead.

Hah, yeah. If top 10 largest airports in the US doesn't designate MAJOR MAJOR, not many do.

FWIW, MIA actually ranks higher than ATL for number of international passengers...almost twice as many! I'd consider Miami to be in the South as well...
