Actually, I trust the Federal Reserve's relatively-hot-off-the-presses numbers over the link you provided, which actually pulled its numbers from Wikipedias census article that, in turn, used numbers from 2000.

Tell you what. Why don't you go and argue with the Federal Reserve's economists on this subject and get back to me with a written retraction from them?

The way those Atlanta peeps get off on MSA numbers you'd think he would've noticed how low they were.

Also, Alabama typically lags in education and health compared to most states. Growing up there (in Huntsville) we always used to thank God for Mississippi and Louisiana otherwise we'd be in last place.

Nice bit of jujitsu. In your weird animus against Birmingham, you can't even argue facts. You just assert whatever lazy notion gets in your head, and find the first statistical table that agrees with you without even looking at the source. So when you essentially declare that Birmingham is poverty-stricken and then I show you that it actually has a per-capita income higher than Atlanta, you suddenly move on to another angle of attack.

Hey, I like Atlanta. Like to visit. Like to shop in places that Birmingham doesn't have. I fully acknowledge that. But I wouldn't want to live there. And, lest you think otherwise, there are plenty of other quite livable American cities that simply smoke Atlanta in just about every metric you can name. So if people from those cities visited this little thread, they'd say, "How cute. Someone from Atlanta wants to lord it over Birmingham about how superior it is."

Look I realize that you're originally from Birmingham and take pride that you're now living in Atlanta, but you're apparently still living here in your head.

When I first moved here i couldn't get over how bad and rude the drivers were. The most dangerous place to be on the roads is coming up to an off ramp if there is the slightest amount of daylight between you and the driver in front of you, because you know some a$$hat is going to shoot into that gap. The wife and I have taken to calling that, pulling an Alabama move.

I was joking with some folks from work that I should mount a gopro on my dash and upload dashcam footage to my new website called, wtfalabama.com. Unfortunately we moved from South Huntsville to Madison, so I don't get to see all the wonderful driving on 565 and South Parkway.

And yet Birmingham still accounts for more than thirty percent of the total GDP of the state as was reported in the Business Journal last week.

The twenty-sixth wealthiest neighborhood in the nation is five minutes out of downtown.

The issue in the city is that it crosses so many geopolitical lines that numbers get skewed. There is a huge inner city poverty that many comparable cities don't have to account for. And yet the suburban economy is booming. ( and the gentrification of downtown, but that is a pricey place to live and work now too)
Birmingham also placed 39 out of the 100 largest metro areas for income growth and overall economic health. All of this while not performing very well in some sectors as we still climb out of the recession. For example, housing sales and construction starts are among the best in the nation right now.

Funny how the numbers can be so flexible according to how one chooses to use them. Being in the city and participating in what is happening there is the best barometer. This is true for any city. But of course on the forum we all know that it is not the truth people are necessarily seeking.

I've been in Madison for 6 years and i have NEVER encounter these "aggressive" drivers that y'all talk about.

In fact, most drivers stay FAR away from me. They are all polite, let me cut in & out of lanes with ease. May be ....

You can play all kinds of games with numbers. cpg35223's data was for "Per Capita Income". Your data was for "Median Household Income for metro areas". Note that city data and metro data may be very different since metro areas may consist of more than one city and the surrounding areas.

Household Income - the combined incomes of all people sharing a particular household or place of residence.
Family Income - income per family
Per capita income - income per person.
