We are traveling from WV to Florida later in the week. Thinking of driving about 7-8 hours the first day which puts is on I-59 somewhere between Chattanooga and Birmingham. We have never been anywhere in this area and when we travel, we like to see what we can along the way to the destination. We will only have late afternoon one day til late morning the next day. Does anybody have any suggestions of a good quick side-trip to take? Appreciate any responses.

There is tons to do in Chattanooga....I would recommend checking it out. Most people start with the Tennessee Aquarium. Downtown Chattanooga is really cool, lots of neat restaurants/shops and just nice to walk around.

That's not the most amazing stretch of road, sorry.

Chattanooga is definitely worth a visit. Birmingham has the Civil Rights Museum and a nice zoo.

Yep...once you get past Chattanooga, there is not much that would be interesting to visit until you hit Bham.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll only be able to hit one or the other. If you had to pick between Chattanooga or Birmingham, which would be your preference?

Will stop and get a hotel room for the night so will only have late afternoon/evening through the next morning. Any suggestions for nice hotel, good restaurant, things to do? (We will be there on a Sunday, if that matters as to what you suggest.)

Another possibility that we are throwing around is to drive to Birmingham on the way down and hit Chattanooga on the way back home. Actually, that is probably a more likely scenario. So, it may not be a Sunday after all. More likely a Saturday.

Little River Canyon National Preserve is amazing and is located on Alabama highway 35 near Ft. Payne, AL just a few miles from I-59. The best thing about I-59 between Chattanooga and Birmingham is the lack of suburban sprawl and the natural scenery. Noccalula Falls Park is located at Gadsden, AL at the southern end of Lookout Mountain and is very nice as well.
