Awesome link. The Stuhlingers are great friends of the family, nice to see Dr. Stuhlinger quoted in there. Being the third generation removed from the rocket team (my grandfather was on it), I never really considered the fact that Nazism was a factor back then, and appearently it was even less of an issue then; than they are trying to make out of it now.

Well I've gotten myself pretty aware of the Jewish community here in Huntsville and I can say with confidence that I have not encountered even one Nazi or third-hand Nazi story in Huntsville.

On the contrary, there is quite a bit of energy from very active Christian groups that are supportive/protective of Jewry in Huntsville and beyond. Etz Chayim Conservative Synagoogue has even gotten anonymous donations of cash money, I presume from one of these individuals. (If you are out there, on behalf of the community, THANK YOU!

I remember the rocket testing shaking the houses although I don't recall any broken dishes and we lived right beside Redstone at one time. Everyone assumed Van Braun and the others were forced to join the Nazi party.

I have to smile reading this article. My family lived in Huntsville in the early '60's. I went to first grade there.

My father was an electrical engineer for General Electric and we were transfered to Huntsville. It was the only place in all of the southern states we lived that we were called "yankees."

I was all of 6, and I clearly remember that the neighbor lady wouldn't give me the same treats that she was handing out to the other kids in the group. She sarcastically told me to "go home and get it from your yankee muthah."

The funny thing about that is that my mother is German. She wasn't one of the German rocket engineers (I didn't want to say she's not a rocket scientist, that's just rude. ), so I guess back in the day a few of the folks in Huntsville had a different kind of yankee to deal with than they were used to.

Great article about Huntsville - I enjoyed reading it!

It was a different time to be sure. I never met any of my neighbors in the first place we lived because we were renters and from out of town (mobile, al). Most of the neighbors had lived there forever and were older, we were in our 20s with a baby. Let's just say the 'southern hospitality was lacking'..
