It is in the Hampton Cove "area".....this is not going to abut the Hampton Cove development.....it will be on Wade Road which is on the other side of 431 back behind the Wal Mart. Its going to back to Valley Cove.

To be in the Hampton Cove "area" you are going to be near housing regardless....there is not a "downtown" area and even the main "business" district (if you can even really call it that) has neighborhoods close by.

This isn't the Huntsville Housing Authority building these apartments. It is private property bought by a private group. There's not much anyone can do about it. .

Was Hampton Cove up in arms when the WalMart was built?? I mean, what did you think was going to be developed in all those open fields??

Yeah, I figured they'd be in the street with torches trying to prevent that from being built. Unite as one community, and fight for at least a Target. Not so much. That kind of lowered the bar, and public housing, stereo outlets, and even buffet restaurants would follow soon after. A dream forever lost.

Oh okay, I am not familiar enough with how the Hampton Cove development is set up. So this apartment building actually affects the Valley Cove neighborhood the most then.

I've been to that walmart down there. Its quite crowded. Someone must want it there, because if they didn't, people wouldn't shop there.

That's the point. Local protests notwithstanding, if Walmart builds it, they will come.

Hampton Cove residents fear affordable apartments will attract crime, hurt home values | AL.com

Neighborhood Concepts, a Huntsville nonprofit group dedicated to providing safe, decent and affordable housing, approached the city more than a year ago seeking financing help for Flint River Apartments.

In December 2013, the Huntsville City Council pledged $325,000 in federal HOME funds to a Neighborhood Concepts affiliate, Flint River LP. The vote was contingent on the company securing tax credits through the Alabama Housing Finance Authority, which it did in mid-2014.

The agenda for this Thursday's City Council meeting includes a related $325,000 loan agreement between the city and Flint River LP.

Got an opinion about how Huntsville should spend its HUD dollars? Now is the time to speak up | AL.com

A public forum next week will help Huntsville officials decide how to spend about $1.5 million a year in future HUD money.

Community Development Director Kenneth Benion said comments from the meeting, scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday on the ground floor of Huntsville City Hall, 308 Fountain Circle, will help the city craft a five-year plan for addressing the needs of low- to moderate-income residents.

Huntsville is required by the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development to spell out how Community Development Block Grant and HOME Investment Partnership dollars will be used from 2016-2020. The plan is due in May

If Hampton Cove residents were really serious about keeping undesirable development out, they would have come together to purchase the surrounding undeveloped land. That'll give them the power and flexibility to be as particular about who builds what on those lands.

Someone mentioned how they'd be more comfortable if the apartments were seniors-only. Granted, a quiet demographic that's relatively high-income and a next-to-nonexistent crime rate. It speaks to the fears of the residents (most of whom are mortgaged up to their eyeballs) who are scared of "those people" knocking the living equity out of their homes, thus putting them underwater and unable to move without taking a sizable loss.

Having a Walmart built in Hampton Cove tells you the income bracket you're dealing with in the area. Anyone who really has any sort of wealth would live in the Ledges or Green Mountain. Or buy a large plot of land out in Owens Crossroads.

A person's bank account does not equate to their mental state, morals or criminality. Generalizations usually indicate lazy thinking, and some of us are just being mean spirited. There are wealthy people that would make bad neighbors and who do not pay their share of the tax burden. Spongers. There are low income folk who have great morals, work ethic and would make great neighbors. Why don't we stop painting groups with one brush, and why can't we play nicely? All we need to know in life we learned in kindergarten. 😉
