Default Huntsville from a newcomer's eyes

... since I am awful at journaling and scrapbooking, but I type endlessly in front of the computer, I decided with the new year to join the bloggers of the world.

Anyways, half the theme of my blog is going to be about my new life here in Huntsville (the other half being about Motherhood). Mostly I am doing it for myself and family who are curious about my life here, but I have gotten a number of PM's from people out of state (potential newcomers) asking me about how I am enjoying Huntsville so I thought it might be of interest to some people.

Hee. We're geeks. We like us rockets.

There's usually snakes up there?

And like the icicles? We were totally gawking at that.

Snakes 'most everywhere...most harmless. Make lots of noise (should be no problem with young 'uns!) and they'll leave you alone.
Cool blog, Jenn! Fun to read a newcomers' viewpoint!

Zenjenn, you have quite the way with words. I enjoyed seeing Huntsville and winter in Alabama through your eyes. It makes me eager to move into the house we bought in Lexington so that I may experience it for myself. Even though we will be an hour outside of Huntsville, I look forward to many a trip into "the big city." We will be visiting our future home in about a week and I can't wait. We have over a year before retirement, when we can truly call ourselves Alabamians, but until then -- I look forward to experiencing Huntsville and the area through your blog.

Cool blog. It is nice to see a blog written by a person that can actually write! I've seen some that are almost nothing more than incoherent ramblings.

zenjenn - When you asked about 'snow', I didn't know that 'ice' would count

Monte Sano gets iced up after every freeze, the ice remains for days, especially on the North or shady side. It's a great hike for kids, but be careful, because the bluffs can be dangerous (as you probably noted). The closed-to-cars section of Bankhead Pkwy makes for an easy hike for kids (paved, quick, park at State Park overlook, icicles, view).

I've seen a few snakes (non-poisonous black racers only) at the kids playground... Even saw one eating a lizard - great learning moment for kids - watch the snake eat breakfast...

Thanks for the compliments everyone.

I don't mind the snakes, but my daughter does! We were hiking down a hillside and she thought the tree roots looked like snakes and she was FREAKING out!

I tried as best I could to explain to her about cold-blooded creatures, and how they are not too fond of being out and about on freezing winter days.
