Hope y'all don't mind another restaurant thread. I was looking for something new to try and browsed our "local pizza...local mexican... etc. and could not find a good "mom and pop" thread. That said, I think Huntsville has the best local mom and pop eatery scene around. Bham and Nashville are not bad but you have to really peel back the national chains to find the authentic local fare there. I know... we are growing fast and sprouting up chains like our big brethren but we still have an abundance of hidden local gems.

So here are a few favorites depending on what I'm in the mood for:

Ol Heidelberg
Blue Plate Cafe
Bandito Burrito on Gov Dr. (Mainly for its unique atmosphere and great beans)

Ol Heidelberg (schnitzel and wurst)
Bandito Burrito (bean tostadas)
Little Libby's (fried catfish)
Big Spring Cafe (diner burgers)
Po Boy Factory (crawfish, po boys, gumbo)
Wintzell's (oysters, fried seafood, gumbo)
Viet Sandwich (banh mi)

For BBQ, I don't think we have any stand-outs.

Mullins is closed.

Walton's at corner of Airport and Whitesburg is a good one - meat and 3 and they serve alcohol. It's a David Martin creation (Steak out, Rosies, Ted's BBQ).

Tender's is a local place and I like their chicken fingers and sauces.

There are some good places on the square in Athens - Luvici's, Village Pizza, Washington Street Grille

Also like Clark's behind Cracker Barrel at I-65 Interchange.

Picasso's Grille is supposed to be coming to the Publix shopping center on County Line Road - their Athens location was good so I'm expecting the same in Madison.

Down S. Parkway, Edith Ann's is GREAT.

Dot's (meat & 2/3) in Hillsboro.
b.b. perrin's barbecue in Decatur.
Dairy Delite in Hartselle for chicken fingers.
I don't care for it, but some like Francesco's for Italian in Decatur.

Don't forget Nick's Ristorante for their steaks...

Maya Blue - I completely agree, but, according to DG, that is only an opinion

Sorry, Grinder, I just had to
