Welcome Jchuck.. Where did you move from Jchuck?
I agree Guntersville is a nice area. Do you know the travel time to the Arsenal?

Greened--gorgeous photos! I love the Chattahoochie! We used to take rafts down there and listen to Jimmy Buffet all the way down it as we floated.
Good times!

From Florida....
I am originally from Indianapolis but have lived all around. Came here from the Ocala area and lived in FL for a couple of years. Came here on business and love the area, especially the lake.

I do not know the travel time to the Arsenal but am guessing about an hour. I do know that it is an easy, beautiful drive.

Welcome fellow FL escapee.. Moved to N. Al from Tampa
Depending on which gate on the Arsenal, I would say you are close in your quess, maybe 45 minutes if you go to the first gate and of course the time of day.

I agree that Guntersville is a GORGEOUS place to live. I don't know what real estate prices are like there, but expect them to be relatively high, because everybody else knows it's beautiful there, too.
One thing to consider if you're living on the other side of the TN River from the Arsenal/Huntsville and commuting: even though AL is a southern state, they do have icy winters sometimes*, and the I-65 and Whitesburg bridges can be either dicey to drive on, or closed altogether. Doesn't mean that there aren't great places to live south of Huntsville, but it would put a crimp in your commute.
*Yes, I know, Huntsville is hardly New England when it comes to snow and ice. If someone wants a New England-style winter, they should probably stay in New England. Huntsville don't play that.

While I guess they can close the roads/bridges but they are pretty good about getting the roads cleared around here by putting down sand.
Since I have only been here a little over 2 years, can't say it has never happened but my neighbor works on the arsenal and he has always gone to work when they have said there might be problems on bridges.
Prices on Lake Guntersville itself are expensive, but there are lots of houses with lake views and even lake access that are reasonable, at least for now.

I am having a very hard time finding good swimming areas that you dont have to pay for. Is Lake Guntersville a swimmable lake and is it the closest one to Huntsville? I too am from Western Washington and I have not found anything comparable as far as camping and lakes. Any suggestions as to where to look?

There are other areas for camping. Little River state park has a waterfall and beautiful scenery. Granted the mountains do not compare to WA but it is very pretty
