Suggestions needed for small, quaint areas with opportunities for children. We are moving next year with our 13, 11, & 9 yo kids. My husband will be working in Huntsville but we are open to a 45-60 minute commute if needed. What areas have strong school systems & performing arts while giving avsmallbtown feel? We currently live in Fairhope, Al so would love to find an area with similar qualities.

I've heard that Arab has good schools and it's definitely small town feel. Maybe too small! But it's a fairly quick commute to HSV.

Closer to HSV & great schools...Madison, of course. But it's suburban feel, not small town. And the Hampton Cove side of town is lovely & good schools also.

Other small towns within driving distance.....Athens, Scottsboro, Hazel Green. Lots of areas....just depends on how much land you want with your home, your budget, & which area/town feels right to you. I live in Madison but I think Athens is a wonderful small town. Great courthouse square w/cute shops & restaurants. Plus convenient b/c it's right on I-65.

Knowing Fairhope as I do, I would suggest that you consider Cullman. It is within your commute time frame and if you look on the east side of the railway you will find much to remind you of Fairhope, from quaint shops and cottages to grander restaurants and beautiful craftsman homes. Broad streets, huge trees, and neighborhoods that are so rare to find.

Cullman is a no nonsense town. It is a community of very industrious and law abiding citizens. It is a friendly place, unless you don't belong for some reason. (such as you are a car thief) A very easy drive if anyone working will be on the west side of Madison County.

Oh, and the school situation is excellent. Again, smallish town, rules and respect.

An aside; is R Bistro still open? I love that place.

Try the Madison (the city of Madison) area. It has one of the best school systems in Alabama and is very much a family community.

I would look at Arab, Athens, and Hartselle. All will be within a reasonable commute to HSV, and all have a very small town feel like Fairhope.

None have the cool downtown area that Fairhope has, but I would say Athens comes fairly close. I love their downtown area, they have some neat shops and restaurants and it has really come alive over the past several years.
