Here's an older thread with more information on what it's like living in Arab.. keep in mind, I lived 2 streets behind downtown in a neighborhood and took part in the community. If you purchase out in the country and don't have neighbors and don't get involved to some degree like Keeper said, then I doubt you would have the same experience.

Any Norman Rockwell towns left in AL?

Arab has great school system if you have or planning to have children!
Majority of people who reside in Arab are white... I have heard not very nice comments towards african-americans from some very sweet white ladies....so... just saying...

Well, I lived there for 15 yrs and never heard a bad word about blacks (despite all the rumors and reputation) except from 2 men that were in their 90s back then and are now long gone. There was a young african american boy in my daughters' classes and he was well liked except for the fact that because he was the only young black at the time he got a lot of attention (positive) and became rather haughty at times. This was appx 20 yrs ago.
I know that I worked with several african american females and we were good friends but they would not come and visit me in Arab because they "heard" that they would be in trouble no matter how much I tried to tell them they would be perfectly fine.

I also have heard the same things but having lived here almost 10 years I have never heard anyone say anything about African Americans. There is a black mgr at WalMart and I do see more African Americans around the city and in stores. There are also a lot of people who have moved here from other areas like Florida. I lived in a very diverse neighborhood in FL and am in no way a racist.

Are their people that are racist that live here.. I am sure there are they just don't talk about it.

Do you like to play golf? There is an extremely nice golf course neighborhood a few miles (I'll guess about 10) north of Arab, which puts it south of Huntsville. It was a country club at one time, but golf now is open to the public ... so it's a "semi-private" country club. The neighborhood itself is great if you like nice housing at a very affordable price. From what I've seen on 'for sale' signs around the course, you can buy there for half to even a third of an equivalent home in Huntsville.

^^Cherokee Ridge....and yes, you can get a VERY nice house in there for much less than comparable properties on the course in Hampton Cove, Canebrake, etc.
