I agree with 1sttime that the Airport/Whitesburg area is very lovely. In fact if I didn't like Madison so much that area would definitely be my second choice. There really are no huge subdivisions in this area on the scale of some I have heard of in Florida with 1000's of houses. I personally live in a one street "subdivision" with ~25 homes and many very large native growth trees. In fact that is what attracted me to this street! I also agree that I have never experienced bad traffic here. When I first moved here I heard native Huntsvillians talk about bad traffic. I had to laugh having lived in Atlanta and Houston, I know bad traffic.

I agree with 1stTimeSouth too. I love the older historic homes too. If I had the money, I'd live right downtown in Twickenham, Old Town, or a 5 Points bungalow. But you can live within a couple miles of downtown or just about anything in Huntsville in a nice neighborhood for a good price. And traffic? What traffic?
Also, as for diversity... I would say Huntsville is relatively diverse especially for Alabama. This town has become what it is largely by the efforts of outsiders. I'd say more than half the population of this area were either born outside Bama or are only second generation Alabamians. It's a great mix of old southern traidition with a progressiveness not common in many southern cities of this size.

Update...
First off...I needed to change my id because of an accidental error in having my account deleted by webby. So there is no more n_sandsdream. And secondly, we have done much research and are very impressed with the results. My husband has already been contacted by several employers in the Huntsville area and the end result is looking very promising... we are hoping for a move in the next 2 to 4 weeks! YAY!
Thanks to everyone who has posted here and shared your thoughts with us...we appreciate it very much!

One thing that noone has pointed out when discussing the jobs in Huntsville is that a very large percentage of the jobs are related to defense contracts. Because of this they are very stable -- with the current world situation there is little chance that they will go away. Many also require a security clearance which means that there is no chance that outsourcing will result in the jobs being sent to India.

I am originally from Uganda in Africa and come here about 20 years ago and am now a citizen that votes without fail. When Africans come to the USA they are naturally scared of the South because of the history of Civil Rights and the suffering that went with it. So my wife who was originally from New Jersy, I and our five children settled in San Diego, California and lived there for all these years except the last two. Our daughter ventured to the University of Alabama in Birmingham to study medicine. About two years ago we bought her a house close to the university, and while I was there I decided to drive north to a place called Huntsville. I stopped at a gas station by California Street as you come into town. I went inside anxious, but I was met by a nice gentleman from India, I suppose, who impressed me with his hospitality.
I drove through the different neighborhoods and liked all of them. Compared to the plywood homes in California, here there were real brick homes, mostly containing nice hospitable people. I like the friendliness exhibited by all the residents of all backgound. I was hooked to Huntsville. So I decided immediately to look around for a potential home. Any brick home, in any neighborhood would do, I told myself. Tired, I decided to go back to Birmingham and finish fixing my daughter up to her new house. Took off to California and immediately called any realtor to find me a house. One did and I bought it unseen. I trusted his judgement, and he was absolutely right. We loved our new home located at the end of a No-through road leading into a tree-covered hill with TV transmitors on top.
I would recommend Huntsville to anyboy looking for a diverse small enough city to relocate to.

Wow, Suliniber...I've been in sales over 30 years and you rarely find anyone so trusting as you. That's neat! And, whenever anyone put their trust in me that much like you did with your realtor, I would bend over backwards to take care of them and not ruin their trust in me. That is so great...and it really gives me a warm feeling.
You are about so good a recommendation to take a serious look at Huntsville as has ever been on this board. Huntsville is definitely one of the cities I am considering as it has so many glowing reviews here.
Thanks!

You should be able to get a nice 2 bedroom apartment for around $800. In my opinion, nice areas would be west University area (around Village of Providence), SE Huntsville, and Madison. All have good schools if that is important to you.

Thank you! But it saves a lot of time to trust people who are trustworthy. However, I have run into serious troubles a number of times by trusting people who turned out not to be. I will always give peoeple the benefit of the doubt until they prove otherwise. It makes my life easier.
I will work with you, Toosie, in whatever sales business you are in.
