Default Are There Fewer Tornado's in North-Eastern AL?

Are there fewer tornado's on the North-Eastern side of Alabama vs. the western side? My husband will be working near the Huntsville airport and I'm wondering if we should try to find a home as far east as we can? Would it make any difference?

Jessica

In the last few years, it seems like western Madison county has been getting more tornado activity. However, east of Huntsville in Jackson Co (which is pretty hilly terrain), a tornado hit and killed 1 person in the outbreak last week. The whole area is prone to tornados. IMO, I wouldn't base a housing decision on tornados. Your husband is probably several times more likely to be killed making a longer commute to work every day than getting killed by a tornado.

I'll agree with that. You have to get past Sand Mountain and up onto Lookout Mountain before the threat seems to diminish. Past performance is no guarantee, yada, yada. Just get a storm shelter from the saved commuting money.

Charles:
Wow! I am very surprised and a little scared by this list! I lived in Lawton OK for about a year. There were severe storms and tornadoes at least once a week in the spring. (Not warnings or watches, but actual tornadoes) Lawton isn't even on the list and it should not be counted with OKC. I hope my Dad doesn't see this list. He is from Maine, scared to death of tornadoes and would not visit us in OK. He has been here 4-5 times, little does he know.

Here's the NWS's excellent little tornado database on Madison County. It shows where all recorded tornadoes have hit and their effects:
