Are there any plans to grow the Huntsville Airport for passengers? Does Huntsville have any plans to attract a discount airline like Airtran or Jetblue?

I read in the Wall Street Journal that Huntsville was the 2nd most expensive airport to fly out of in the US. These days, the size of the airport and cost of traveling out the airport can heavily influence the growth of a city.

Huntsville did get Allegiant Air which is a discount airline. They did cancel their flights to Vegas, but you can fly into Orlando / Samford airport for about $39 one way. Of course it gets higher with all the taxes and fees. I am sure they have other flights to different places, but that is the only destination I know of right now, taking the kids to Disney this summer.

Allegiant doesn't really count because it only flies twice a weak to Orlando. For most business travelers, that won't cut it. Besides it doesn't drive down the prices of Delta. Right now a flight to Orlando on Delta is $1100 for next week.

I believe Allegiant is a step in the right direction but Huntsville needs a serious discount airline.

A lot of people drive to Birmingham or Nashville for cheaper fares. With more advance planning, the cost from Huntsville isn't that bad, and a lot of times it's the same or only a tiny bit more. But if you're trying to go next week...good luck! But check the costs from Birmingham, Nashville or, heck, even Memphis or Atlanta. Good luck!

I agree that Hsv Airport is much more convenient, I have mostly flown Southwest out of Nashville or on occasion I have flown out of Chattanooga as well.

The main problem is that Hsv is not a hub. You have Nashville and Birmingham to the North and South of us that are hubs in the area. It would be great to see, but someone would have to dump a bunch of money into it to get it going.

Huntsville doesn't really need to be a hub, its just needs to be serviced by cheaper airlines. I wouldn't mind connecting through Atlanta or Nashville if it meant I didn't have to drive 1.5 hours each way to the airport. If you look at the overall time of the trip including layovers, I would imagine it would be quicker to fly out Huntsville connect to Atlanta instead of driving to Nashville and flying non-stop. You could show up 45 minutes before take off and still make your flight at HSV. I would imagine that would not be the same in Nashville or Birmingham.

I agree that it does not need to be a hub, but like I said, then they would have to dump a bunch of money into getting their airline at Hsv Airport. With the price of gas and how much the airlines are struggling as a whole, it might be hard for them to do. Even though I would love it if they would.

That's exactly the problem. Huntsville has to invest in the airport. I know they are upgrading the runways, etc but they need to actively search for new airlines. They could offer cheaper gate leases to any new discount airlines. I am not asking that Huntsville have the cheapest airfares, but it would be nice if the airfares where competitive with the market. It is a fact that Huntsville is the 2nd most expensive airport to fly out of. Cincinnati is #1, which is a delta hub. The legacy airlines are making tons of cash off of Huntsville.

It could run you $500. It's never cheap...that's why we've been known to drive to Atlanta to get on a plane.
However...I've flown from Huntsville to New York for $150 round trip thanks to Priceline, and that included the first leg to Atlanta.
