I have enjoyed the posts so far but no one has mentioned living at the lake. I am a contractor and will be staying in Huntsville indefinitely, at least til December. I am married and have two kids 18 & 22 none of which will move with me, but will visit on weekends.

My husband grew up in Anniston and keeps talking about getting a lake house. I'd like to rent, furnished, since nothing is set in stone yet. It may work into permanent, and if so, I will purchase at some point.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a decent "vacation home"?

Most vacation type rentals will be in the Guntersville Lake area. There's not much in the way of vacation homes (esp. rentals) on the stretch of river between Huntsville and Decatur.

There was a house listed last week for $1,100 a month 5/3 on the lake, not furnished though. Goose pond colony in Scottsboro may have something. Condos/apts aren't directly on the lake though.

There are floating condos on Lake Guntersville, albeit small from the looks of them. They only list rentals by the day/week. Should be cheaper by the month although may be more than you want to pay.
