Wondering what to expect? I've only been summoned once, many years ago. Got excused because I had small children. They are now grown.

I got summoned about 2 years ago. Showed up, got ushered into what looked like a secondary courtroom and waited about a hour with about 30-40 others. Eventually we were led up to the main courtroom on the 2nd floor and briefed by the judge and the attorneys for both the prosecution and defense. Answered a questionnaire, then dismissed to lunch break. We came back, I got selected with 13 others, and the trial started pretty much immediately after those not selected had left. The case too a week.

Honestly, I enjoyed it. The judge (Hikala?) was super nice and the entire team was happy to help with anything we needed.

Just got down with Federal Grand Jury in NY. About 80 of us were called - as a group we went into the courtroom and they called the names of 35 perspective jurors - as people were released for one reason or another - they replaced them with one of us waiting. They went through 77 of the 80 that reported before they had their jury picked which was to last a week - but my name was never called - so we were released.

Don't know about Alabama but in NY - for Federal - they could call anytime within the 3 month period that we were summoned for.

I've lived here for almost 18 years and I've never been summoned. I don't think they summons too many under 40.

Husband was summoned for federal court and served for 3 days.
He's been summoned three times for circuit court, served 3 days on 2 days.
I've been summoned 3 times for circuit court, served on 1 jury. I was summoned for service in September, but deferred to December. Still waiting to hear from them. It'll be my fourth time.

Yes. Sat in a room for two consecutive mornings, waiting to be chosen for a jury pool. The opportunity never came, and I was excused with the thanks of the court.

I get legitimate excuses, but I'm surprised at the number of people who try to wriggle out of it simply because they think it's inconvenient. It's our duty as citizens, like voting.

Never summoned to a Federal case but was for a state murder trial several years ago.

I had never been on a jury before. Told to go sit in a room with a bunch of other people. Lawyers gave a short synopsis of the trial (Murder 2). Started asking the potential jurors a bunch of questions (name, spouse's name and where both worked, among others). The judge then asked a bunch of people to leave.

Next thing I know, the prosecutor is talking and we're in the middle of a forking murder trial. Holy Cow!

Prosecutor had his first witness change his story before the prosecutor ever got the first question in (HE DIDN'T DO IT, HE DIDN'T DO IT, I NEVER SAID HE DID IT!!!!!!!!). Prosecutor to judge: "Permission to treat as hostile?" Judge: "Granted."

Prosecutor to Witness: Please state your full name."

Witness: "HE DIDN'T DO IT, HE DIDN'T DO IT, I NEVER SAID HE DID IT!!!!!!!!, Blubber, blubber, blubber."

It was quite comical. Witness either forgot and just didn't plan ahead about his already taped confession. Doh!

Prosecutor's 2nd witness failed to show.

Bottom line, we found the guy guilty of 2nd degree murder; here he is: Alabama Department of Corrections

He would have got away with it (he threw the gun away) but he forgot about and/or failed to notice the victim's blood spray on his pants. OOPS! DNA for the win.

Prosecutor was Robert Broussard (current Madison county DA I believe). Judge was Judge Joseph Battles, now retired. I forget the name of the defense lawyer, but I could have done a better job of defending this guy and I don't even know how to spell laywer. Personally, I think he threw the case, but whatever.

Oh well, not a Fed case as asked but I thought some might find it interesting.
