I've started researching the gyms in the Huntsville area, and took a drive over to Planet Fitness -- they have the usual huge selection of workout machines etc., but I was surprised to find they didn't have much in the way of group classes. I'm looking for a large gym that has a broad selection of group classes (pilates, yoga, martial arts, water aerobics, spin, etc.) and multiple rooms so they have several different ones going on at the same time.

I hadn't thought of YMCA, although it doesn't meet another criterion I didn't mention: I'm a single guy that wants to meet quality women, so I'm looking for a large gym with group classes for that reason -- and as a side-benefit, going to the gym is good for my health, even on the days I don't meet any women.

Rush Hour was one my wife was considering because it has classes. She's in the "I don't have time" mode right now.

I do PF which is just machines, though the dumbells go up to 75 lbs and there are 5 smith machines. The classes there are just how to use the machines. And a few of the machines are known to be bad, like the twisting lower back strainer (first machine on the right heading into stretching area.)

I just use the Cybex Arc machine, dumbells, the pulldown machines (two different kinds) and leg press, so PF works for me. And it's location and price are really good. (I know I should work my core more, but as long as I got fat on my abs, how do I know I don't already have a six pack.)

Perhaps try the University Fitness Center which has a lot of what you're looking for. Its on the UAH campus but open to the public for memberships. It gets stupid packed around 5pm so either go in the morning or early afternoon if you're able to.

OK thanks, I'll look into that one. Although, I should mention, I'm looking for 30-something professional women, not college girls (even if they're nice eye-candy), so if there's something that draws that demographic, while also being good for me to use for fitness, that would be the ideal.

Are you suggesting that women who workout at the Y aren't "quality?" What is your definition of "quality?"

Oh, I'm sorry -- I've never been to a YMCA -- I thought since the "M" stands for men, that it was men-only.

Don't think it has been that way for a very long time. Here's the link to the HSV area YMCA.
