Uh--okay---um, this makes me feel a little bit better about Alabama...
I think.
At least we're not alone down here....

Well, and a school district is different than the state numbers--Grissom, HHS and BJHS prove that in spades.

I too hate the stigma behind Alabama, but remember that this comes from ignorant people. Most likely people who have never been to Alabama, but choose to be so "progressive" and "open-minded" by believing stereotypes and whatever they see on tv. I get this whenever I visit KY, TN, AR, AL, MS, wherever. "Why would you go THERE?" I counter with "Well, have you ever been?" 9 times out of 10, the answer is "no." Just blow them off. Who cares? Let them stay in their polluted, congested, crime infested cesspools of "educated" and "sophisticated" living. You know better.

Yeah...it is like they want to perpetuate the stereotype. Those people exist everywhere. I haven't been to an area yet that didn't have that type of person and I have spent time in about 45 of our great states. The only area I haven't been to yet is the upper great plains, and I am sure they are no different.

I do have to admit that I also was a bit apprehensive when my oldest son moved to the Huntsville area ( Toney) 4 years ago. I was pleasantly surprised, and as some here already know, my wife and I are having a home built in Harvest and plan on moving down foe good in either October or November! I also here the 'knock' on Alabama from people here. I just don't understand that kind of idiocy. There's PLENTY that you can joke about New Jersey LOL!!( George Carlin has a GREAT CD on it as a matter of fact!)

There are some good schools in AL that rank pretty high in the SATs. It is the state as a whole that needs to be improved. In Arab where I live the schools overall composite score on the SAT was 77.16. That means that Arab students scored better on the test than 77.16 percent of all students in the nation. Not bad for a small town school.
Even though FL ranks higher than AL, it is because they only teach the test all year.

The more I have been studying the schools, the more surprised I have been by Arab. That is fantastic. I don't have it in front of me but I think I remember they were 2nd or 3rd in the state after Mountainbrook. (Sadly, can't say the same for Huntsville)

Madison sounds like a good option, since I'll be lodging there. Will there be enough good maps of HSV and Madison at the airport or where can I find those? My flight gets in tomorrow morning...

Just one observation, I was at the main Huntsville Library yesterday around 4PM or so, seemed fine to me...didn't see any less than upstanding types.
One thing about the Huntsville Madison County Library that was disappointing, you can't place an online hold on an item. An IT person I spoke with explained it is because there is only one courier and he would be overburdened if patrons had this ability.
I emailed the new head Huntsville librarian today over there; she emailed back and agreed that this needs to be fixed - she'd never seen this herself.
Maybe someday the Online Hold button will be renamed the "Charles Memorial" Online Hold button.....
