Dont let me scare you.. the people are very friendly. When I got there back in 1989, part of our briefing was telling us new soldiers what areas were considered dangerous to certian races. This was a long time ago and I am sure it has changed since then.
A couple questions for Huntsville people.. Is The Car lot ( LANDMARK ) still have all the american flags around it.. one of the coolest things I saw as a young soldier. And is ChiChi's mexican food still there? I think thats what it was called. Did Red Stone ever get a hospital besides the small fox medical one there on the hill? I lived just below that medical center.. near the NCO club. I can see it all like it was yesturday.. man I miss that post.
ebinca when you get to Huntsville, go check out the space center its very cool. And really dont be worried.. Huntsville is a great place.. I never had any problems while I was there. So please dont worry about my question..

Huntsville is racially mixed to the same degree as every other city in the US - north or south, east or west. As in every other city I am familiar with - and I have travelled alot and lived in a number of cities-- there is a predominance of one race or another in different areas, but there is no racial tension if a person of a different race moves into the neighborhood. Madison and SE Huntsville are predominantly white, but there are many blacks who live in both areas. By the same token, North Huntsville is predominantly black but there are many whites who live in that area - particularly older Huntsvillians who have owned their homes for many years.
To the person asking about medical facilities on the Arsenal, I am not familiar with that, but there are two very good hospital in Huntsville, one of which is a recognized trauma center (Huntsville Hosp.).
ChiChi is no longer there but Romano's Macaroni Grill is in its place.

We do get some 'wind events' occasionally, but they seem to be fewer than those I saw in my years in Dallas or Raleigh. In the last four years it's been more like wind shear or straight-line winds that might knock down a panel in a privacy fence. We did have a bit of hail this past year, too, but nothing really severe. Hurricanes might send rain and a little wind, but we're too far inland for much else. Plus, with the amount or aviation and missile-related activity, the local weather guys do an amazing job of forewarning. We usually know days in advance or any potential severe weather. They do a great job. Overall, the weather is terrific, though typically hot and humid in the summer. But hey, it's not Texas Hot and you can simply head to Lake Guntersville to cool off or install a pool!

Muhnay,
Landmark is now Bill Heard Chevrolet and there are still a lot of flags around the place. Fox Army Hospital is probably no bigger than it was when you were stationed here and has cut back significantly on services to both retirees and active duty personnel. ChiChi's is remembered fondly by many to this day, but any rumors of its return have proven to be unfounded.
And just like everywhere else, if you run your mouth in the wrong place or at the wrong time without first engaging your brain, you still can get in trouble in Huntsville. It is somewhat harder to do so these days though, since most everyone is working and relatively happy.
Glad you have good memories of our little town. Best of luck to you.

Thanks.. for the info and the kind words. I tend to engage my brain way after I have said something.. lol.
One of the things I would do is drive the Officers at RSA down to another military base further in the state with a better hospital to mend them. I was an 88Mike ( truck driver ) at a place with no trucks. was the shamist assignment I ever had. not that I am complaining. I loved it there. Heck you all still had A&W there, and white castle... I can remember going shopping at a local store and you all didn't sell tortillas.
Yeah Fond memories... some hard ones too.. If you are still there, see if you can find the article on the soldier that pulled the girl from the rubble after the tornado hit. That was me. =)

You're welcome. No more A&W or White Castle, but lots of Sonics and Dairy Queens now, as well as tortillas in all the stores.
My Beloved Spouse used to have the tornado Special Edition the Huntsville Times put out after everything was cleaned up--I'll look you up in that if we can still find it. Thanks for helping out when we needed it--the military personnel here have always been a great asset to our community--the best and the brightest. And again, best of luck to you.

There is more segregated neighborhoods in the North in my opinion. I lived in Huntsville for five years and i see no issue with racism there. Everyone is friendly and nice. Stangers say good morning and good afternoon. Huntsville is a great place to raise a family and the schools in South east Huntsville are the best. Stay in South east Huntsville, not the North, there is little more crime there. The tornadoes are not that bad in South Hunstville.

The continuous flawless weather we've been having lately is getting boring.

I don't know about the rest of you but today was one of the first days in a long time that really felt like "not winter".
Not only was it not cold, it was almost warm and I could feel the humidity. It felt great.
