Thanks All!!! This area being the melting pot that it is, I had a feeling there were a few snowsport enthusiast out there.

With the somewhat recent emergence, in popularity of the x sports (x-games, Dew Tours and Olympics) and local skateparks showing they can become a positive venue for kids and a community I wonder what impact this growth will have, if any on the local skating/skiing/snowboarding interest?

Yeah, Snowshoe is the best, we have gone to Sugar and Ski Beach for long weekend trips and it was fun. Bottom line, it is all still east coast snow....not near as powdery as the west coast.
A friend of mine just went to Sapphire and had a great time, again, long weekend type trip.
The drive up to Boone is moderate and is short enough that you can take last minute trips relatively easily.
Snowshoe is a longer drive, but worth it if you can stay for longer than a few days.

I spent most of my skiing in in the PacNW, Colorado and Europe. For the Southeast, I recommend Ober Gatlinburg, TN

Ober Gatlinburg Ski Resort & Amusement Park

The Huntsville Times had a nice article on "local" skiing.

Ski South: Abundant slopes are closer than you think | Huntsville Times Living - al.com

There was a good graphic which I will post and credit to the Huntsville Times:
