I have been to Mountainbrook and it is a lovely community. I also love Hoover. And I can tell you, housing is cheaper there as well. Now I read the education dollars are greater as well... sheesh. But they don't have business/nasa/etc/brac artificially inflating the prices here.

And can someone please tell me why gas costs the same per gallon here as in DC? Last year, before the big economic meltdown, we were 20 cents cheaper (without hunting for cheap prices). Now we are the same as DC. Please? What is going on? I drive over that mountain on 72 and the gas goes up 20 cents -- it is a mystery.

Not sure what you are talking about - I was in DC this week and gas was $2.55/gal and in Huntsville I paid $2.17/gal.

When we first moved here last fall Huntsville gas costed more than DC suburb gas... was kinda crazy. Still not complaining about these prices though.

I was there two weeks ago and the price per gallon was $2.45 there and it is about the same here unless I go to Kangaroo or Walmart... they're not always convenient. And it's kinda counterproductive to use gas to save dollars. Where do you live?

I live in Huntsville, where gas tends to be about 30-40 cents a gallon cheaper than DC.

I have also noticed that gas in generally a cent or two cheaper where I live in Huntsville than city of Madison. Not sure why? Murphy's (walmart) can have different prices at different location.

And gas in Decatur is usually a little cheaper than in Huntsville or Madison.

A lot of the price has to do with the state/county/city taxes. Diesel has even MORE taxes.
