Default seeking out more green, open space

1) I'm in San Diego, CA.
2) Everything but the weather is getting harder to tolerate here... high cost of living, urban sprawl/noise, living so close to my neighbors, most people being stressed out and not friendly, politics (Feinstein/Schwarzenegger just proposed a $9.3 billion water bond)... Plus my husband has already relocated to Huntsville, and it would be nice to see him more than the 4 times/year when UAH has breaks.
3) Nashville/Murfreesboro was our runner-up, but MTSU couldn't hold a candle to UAH. My husband is studying physics/astronomy in his retirement. We liked Clemson/Greenville, SC very much, but it was a little too small/remote for us. Ditto on Ole Miss (Oxford, MS). Hated TX (looked at Austin, College Station). NC beautiful but has been discovered and housing in Raleigh area too pricey for us.
4) I'm not moving yet because I'm fixing up our house to sell (while I watch the market get worse by the week) and I'm not quite old enough or rich enough to retire without cashing out my house.
5) I'm also a Detroit Tigers fan, as my husband grew up there.
6) My husband really dislikes the tornado warnings and watches. He really got spooked in Feb. with the unusual weather. I like the trees and open spaces, Big Spring Park, and the drive up 231 from Fayetteville to Shelbyville, TN.

Aug. 5th seems to be a popular travel day; I, too, am flying to HSV for 2 weeks of house-hunting and checking out the World's Longest Yard Sale.

What is the World's longest Yard Sale? Where? I have a bunch of stuff to unload after our move in despite our original purgings!

Yard sales are BIG up here, even clothes sell pretty well if cheap enough.

Cost of living, quality of life

Greenville SC, Johnson City, TN, Raleigh-Durham NC

trying to make decision right now - son wants to be close to snow

5) Anything else you want to tell us that we don't know?

Interested in any info about schools for 14 y.o. son, wondering about how far out you have to go to get "affordable" - for me, beneath 100k

We will be visiting in the next week or so -- any "must sees" for someone in the process of making a decision?

1) Current City and State
DC/NOVA (close in, like you can smell it. not far out where there's yards and stuff)

2) Why do you want to leave?
I think I want to just slow down rather than hit this grind every day. I'm young enough to hang here for 20 more years and try to get near the top of the food chain, but I doubt I'd be happy if I did that.

3) 2nd and 3rd choice cities?
I don't know, but we want to live in the mountains, or close to them, but not out-west mountains. HSV ain't mountains (close maybe), but it's not so expensive and has federal jobs. If WVA had federal jobs in my line of work, I'd be shooting for WVA. Same for other places in the "Smokies".

4) What’s currently holding you back from moving?
A job opening hasn't popped up in my federal series at a grade I'll take, yet.

5) Anything else you want to tell us that we don't know?
No. Just be nice and wave when I get there. If I get there. I wave to everyone. I'm not touched or anything. I just like waving. It's funny, the dudes in the hood I drive through every day now smile and wave. Before, they just looked at me like I was looney. I think we need more waving.

6) If already in Huntsville, what do you like, dislike, pleasant surprises, regrets? N/A.

I know jack about HSV, but I'm from the Deep(er) South. I know it's hotter than three hebrew slaves. I know tornados. I know the only people who can drive are the people in your immediate family. I know soda is Coke and Taledega Nights was a documentary. I'll figure out the rest if I move down there.

Current City and State? Perry, GA

2) Why do you want to leave? Better job offers

3) 2nd and 3rd choice cities? Aiken SC, Flagstaff AZ

4) What’s currently holding you back from moving? time and money

How safe is it for 40yo women who are alone but definitely not single? Like Buzztime Trivia but not at a meat market.
