I'm noticing that apartment rents seem a bit high for such a low cost living area. Some even close to what I'm paying now.

Any chance AL will go the way of lifting the taxes from food and prescription purchases? I think it's a bit nuts when any state charges tax on food.

I'm kind of wondering where the cost of living savings would be? Property purchase and taxes?

What's a gallon of gas going for right now?

I've also noticed that I am getting more miles per gallon because I am not stuck in stop and go traffic and idling all the time.

As to Cost of Living: here's my take--groceries no cheaper, dining out no cheaper, wine is more expensive, alcohol is more expensive than Fairfax, VA, but housing is cheaper. And we can't beat the friendliness--no price tag on that one. We save money on our houses and on gas.

You will love it here no matter where you choose to live.

Good to know. Costco is the name of the game here in the PacNW. Sam's clubs are pretty rare, although I used to be a cardholder when living in Tx.

As it stands right now, I have a pretty easy commute to work, especially since school is out and I don't get stuck in the slow zones. I have a 7 mile commute and I take all the secret squirrel backstreets (no interstate, yay!!)

Thanks for the feedback on the cost of living. I'm sure that's what I'll find when I vist. My recon trip to Louisville pretty much saw the same: gas and groceries were no cheaper. Rent was cheaper, liquor cheaper (no taxes on alcohol in KY), but many things I didn't see much difference. Housing was the big difference, however, wages were pretty low--35-40k or so.

You're right. You can't put a price on nice people!!! Priceless!

We have Costco as well, I prefer it to Sam's. I think they have higher quality products, meat and produce.

Taxes are also very low in AL, particularly property taxes.

Honestly I could not recall what the local income tax was so I looked it up and from what I can see, we don't have one.
