To the 4% state sales tax, add county and city taxes, which vary. For instance, here in Decatur the sales tax is 9%, whereas in Huntsville's it's 8%.

Cobolt,

I work for Boeing and I am also looking at moving to Huntsville. I was just there recently for some training and I thought it was wonderful. My company always has openings there, you should check them out if you haven't already. I am in the same boat as you, I have to apply for the job, get an interview and then hope I get the offer. I just started applying for positions there and so far no interviews yet. I am originally from Calif, but live in god foresaken TX now. What field are you in ? Good luck in your quest!

Don't forget, there are Boeing plants in both Huntsville and Decatur.

I've lived in Huntsville since 2002. I came here from Memphis, TN. I miss the big city environment of Memphis, but Huntsville is really a good place. The cost of living is fantastic. You should EASILY find a house for $100k. Huntsville doesn't have any terribly bad areas. I'd avoid most of the 35810, 35811, and 35816 zip codes.

The most important thing to consider, however, is allergies. Until moving to Huntsville, I NEVER had a single allergy problem. Now, I'm on several allergy medications, nasal sprays, and a sinus irrigation pump.

Be prepared to deal with allergies if you move here. My doctor told me that basically everyone has them, but that locals just don't realize that they have them since they've always had them.

Good luck!

One West Coast to another, I've been here for about 5 months and love it! Grew up in Oregon!

Yeah... I know someone who just took a temp position with Boeing there in HSV. Where are you in Tx? I'm in God-forsaken WA state right now and trying to get back to the South....and I would consider returning to God-forsaken Texas! LOL....

Cobolt--how about Nashville or Birmingham? They have stuff for Single people to do and are still "south"--I know it depends on job stuff, but... course, in this economic environment, I'd probably sit tight for a bit. Ride out the election before heading to an area that depends on the gov't for it's contracts...

Well I'm not making a move yet. I'm just taking a 2 more exploratory trips the rest of this year while I've locked in reasonable airfares. I'm kinda in the "wait and see" mode myself, but still exploring places. To tell you the truth, I'm leaning more towards Govt/civil service jobs. I have 11 years military service that I don't want to go to waste in computing retirement etc, so I'm not necessarily looking into the private sector.

I'm not too interested in Nashville. Too big. I am leaning more towards Ft Worth and a few other places. I was hoping to get out of WA before the hammer comes down for the next 6-8 months (the gray, soggy, perpetual cloud and rain blanket).

We'll see.

We lived in the Houston area and loved it -- friends moved there from Fairfax, VA and they, despite weather beaten this past week, love it as well. It's cheaper to buy houses there than here in Hville. We're actually toying with the idea of retiring in the northern part of the area--Woodlands. We can have small town life and laid back TX attitude with the benefit of a larger cosmopolitan area serving our cultural needs. It's a neat place.

Family live in the Dallas/FT. Worth area and like it a lot as well. Fort Worth is interesting.

I love TX and Texans, but hey, I married a Texan LOL

Default Which state?

I think you must be talking about Huntsville, Texas. You will not find a nice lot in a safe neighborhood in Huntsville, Alabama for 100K, much less a house. But, thanks for the joke and uplifting laughter.
