I just noticed in my last post that I typed "wear" instead of "where." Hmm, well we all have off days . . .
VA Tech is easy if you're in Virginia, but not so much when one is applying out of state.
Harvard doesn't have a special application, it uses the Common Application, and then they usually have a supplemental portion that you have to complete. When I applied, they still admitted students early, but they don't do that anymore.
The most difficult application, well I take that back, the most time consuming application out there is Princeton's.

I didn't fill out the application for Princeton, but I can tell you that the application and process for the US Military Academy (West Point) is quite lengthy as well. I doubt Princeton requires a full medical history along with physical examination and physical testing (run, jump, sprint, throw, pullups, etc) along with the essay, academic application and leadership application. Don't forget that none of that even matters unless you have succeeded in the applicaton process with your Representative, Senator or the Vice President to acquire a nomination. Each one of them has a different process for you to follow. To be fair, the Air Force Academy and Naval Academy have very similar processes.

I recall one or 2 people from my class going to West Point and 1 to Annapolis. I couldn't figure out how they convinced the congressmen to give them nominations. Well, that only applies to two of them. Huge, huge, morons.

Well I know for a fact that VA Tech is NOT that easy to get into. Kids need a very high GPA as well as slew of EC activities and leadership qualities. What was really difficult was the kids competing from NoVA to get in as they have a 5pt scale vs the normal scale everywhere else. An A is 94 or better. No one I know who has kids attending college this year considered VA Tech a safety school at all. It was a top pick for the NoVA people I knew--not a fallback.
Maybe it is different for people coming from out of state--but that is the info I have from those people living instate.

I'll have to tell my daughter that--that's her school of choice (don't ask me why... I don't know). I think she'll have to start a homeless shelter or something to show her "leadership skills" to get into that ivy league school LOL.

Part of me still regrets not picking Princeton.

I agree with the advice to tour the school. Personally, I think a lot is about getting a feel for the school, talking to people who work there-I'd start w/the guidance counselor. I guess I'm a "vibe" person. As a former teacher I would steer you away from test scores, and maybe look at school incident reports/safety, courses offered, etc. I also agree w/pp that a high achiever at Butler will stand out more than one @ Grissom. Taking into account where the kid wants to be after high school matters, too (BTW, I got into Vanderbilt w/under a 3.5 and an 1170 SAT, so I def. agree that nonacademics count). FWIW, my kids will go to Bob Jones.
