My top restaurants:
Mexican:
La Michoacana is the best I've tried in Hsv/madison (and I've tried a LOT of Mexican Restaurants here). The staff is great, the food is delicious (no ground beek to be found--only chopped steak, beef and chicken are flavorful and cooked with lots of veggies). Great salsa and entrees, and on a cold winter day the daily soup "especials" are fabulous (hearty and warm). Plus, of all the Mexican places I've been, this one has the highest frequency of Mexican diners, so it must be good, right? It's in a hole in the wall, dive of a place, but the inside is very clean. Also, since I've been going so often, the owner has taken to teaching my SO and I a bit of Spanish.

I also like El Palacio occasionally, but be prepared for heartburn. It's some greasy stuff.
BBQ:
Chuck Wagon BBQ in Madison--you MUST try the brisket (Madison Blvd. just West of Sullivan St. it's a tiny shack and if you blink you'll miss it), I just can't believe I haven't heard more people talk about this place! In fact, everyone I have recommended to this place now frequent it regularly.
Gibson's is a close 2nd (all I can say is WHITE SAUCE! yum yum yum. Also good breakfast).
Pizza:
Sam and Greg's, although I plan on trying Tortora's here soon per many recommendations, so this may change. I do love Sam and Greg's for many other reason's than just pizza though (gelato, atmosphere, music, meeting cool people).
Chinese: I personally really miss
Jade Palace (sadly, they are no more). Tai Pan Palace (Huntsville--corner of Governor's and the parkway) isn't bad. It's hard to get good authentic Chinese food unless you happen to have a Chinese friend who can talk to the waitress/cook for you--in which case, most of the Chinese places in town that aren't buffets or shopping center 5-things-on-the-menu kind of places are pretty good. It's too bad they don't put the authentic stuff on the menu...
For Chinese buffets, I like
China Buffet Hwy 20 in Madison, and there's one (can't remember the name, seems like it was pretty generic) in the shopping center next to Walmart in Hampton Cove that was surprisingly good. Both have a good selection of sushi (it's not the best sushi, but definitely good for buffet sushi), and lots of different entrees, side dishes, and veggies (plus crab legs, shrimp, lobster), and cheap prices. Also, as mentioned previously, New China Buffet #3 on Jordan Ln isn't bad. VERY crowded at lunch though.
Tai: I know Surin is a chain (albeit regional) and it's not that authentic, but damn if it isn't good. I really can't say anything bad about this place (except maybe the service sometimes, it's hit or miss). I love the coconut soup. Thai Garden is pretty good, also. I have yet to try Charm Thai for comparison, but hope to soon--I have heard (from several people) it's the best in town.
Sushi/Japanese: Edo's is probably the best in town, but I really enjoy I ♥ Sushi. I had bad service (I mean
reallly bad) the first time I went, but the food was so good I made it back. Haven't had bad service since that first time so maybe it was a fluke. And then for cheap less good sushi, I like Miyako's $1 sushi night (monday).
German: I'm by NO means a connoisseur of German food (far from it), but I went to Schnitzel Ranch (it's pretty convenient to my neighborhood), and was impressed by it. The waitress was a very sweet German lady, the atmosphere was surprisingly cozy (considering the outside is pretty ugly), and I thought the food was quite good (the meat was tender, the sauce was flavorful but not overpowering--I had a cream sauce with onions and mushrooms, don't remember the name, and the spaetzle was homemade and yummy). Also, the prices were very reasonable. I don't see why people seem to dislike it. I just haven't tried much German food though, so maybe I just don't know. But in the grand scheme of all food I've had, it wasn't bad.
Greek: I have trouble picking a favorite, but I enjoy
Papa Gyro's, Jamos, and
Taziki's. I've heard some people giving Taziki's a bad rap, but only people who've lived up in the Midwest (Chicago/Detroit, etc). I can't speak for the food up there, but I like what we have here.
Sandwiches (American): Stanleio's!!!! Hands down. It's probably pretty bad for you, but sometimes you gotta splurge. You must get the Kitchen Sink at least once, to be able to truly call yourself a Huntsvillian (hah, not really, but kinda). And get everything on it. I don't even like pickles, but they really make the sandwich better. This place has been around for ages, and it's become a staple of the town. Sidenote: I miss Subzone. Quite different than Stanleio's, but really good. Why did you have to go????
Or Po Boy factory (although it seems to be in a bit different catagory). I'll count it as seafood, and claim that there isn't any good seafood here unless you like catfish (which I don't) or crawfish (it's the only thing we have that's fresh.) Po Boy's/Scruffy's has awesome crawfish. Landry's is gross, but Red Lobster is grosser.
Best hamburgers? My back yard. Except I need to try Soul Burger. But I imagine still, my backyard. Can't beat grilled out burgers.
