Sorry to hear that, we've had a lot of great meals there. She is currently transferring much of the day-to-day operations to her daughter but the last time we went the food was wonderful.

Oh oh oh!
SAM & GREGS (downtown) has THE best pizza in town, hands down (see below about their gelato), though BUCK'S PIZZA (Moore's Mill & Winchester) is pretty decent as well. When my husband and I are craving a plain pepperoni pizza, though, we head to DONATOS for their thin crust pepperoni (100 slices per pizza, edge to edge. Delicious!).
VIET HUONG satisfies my Vietnamese cravings. It is great for an Asian restaurant (one of the best in HSV), so-so for a Vietnamese one (compared to others I've been to)
PAPA GYROS' food is quite yummy, but I have to say that the styrofoam plates and cups are a big turnoff for me and I always regret having gone there - too much waste!
Back to SAM & GREG'S - their home made gelato is supurb! They always have different flavors - pumpkin is a good one to try right now! They've had sunflower seed (two thumbs up), rose, coconut (my husband's favorite), chestnut, apple cider, etc... always something different to try there, and it's always great.
As far as Mexican food is concerned, I really love LA MICHOACANA (SW corner of University and Memorial Pkwy w. of Shoneys). The food is quite good (not supurb, but I'm always happy), and the owners are incredibly nice people. I love the traditional tacos here, especially the bbq and al pastor. There's also a taqueria on the corner of Triana and Drake (SW) called EL CAZADOR. Their food is great! Only problem is that there isn't any seating, but I'm OK eating in my car. when I go there.
So - what's the best Italian Restaurant in town, anyway? For me, Sazio was OK, but I only went there once. I wanted to try it again, but they went out of business first! Bummer! Happens a lot in this town.

I would also like to mention DING HOW II (or is it III?) on Airport Rd. and Whitesburg: awful!!! The food is so-so, but the owners there are horrible! Want to feel like you are intruding on somebody's bad day? Go to DH. The waitstaff (mostly Latino) are nice, but the lady that grudgingly shows you to your table and rings you up makes it not worth my time. Of course, if you're looking for cheap, that's a different story.

Of the ones still around Old Heidelburg is probably best. We've been there a couple of times. We liked the Biergarden in Madison (been there with them 2X plus taken other visiting family there) but it closed a couple of years ago. We went to Cafe Berlin on their last visit and not only was the food not good the service was terrible. We also tried a small place on Jordan -- not sure if it still around, but the food again was not impressive. Haven't tried the Schnitzel Ranch but the reviews were not good so I didn't suggest it on their last visit. Basically I guess our problem was that our hopes were so high because we thought it would be like Biergarten.

I suggest you try Tortora's in Hampton Cove. That's my best in town.

I love Sam and Greg's.
You are about the third person I've heard recommend La Michoacana. I think it is time to try it.
Italian? Now that Lucciano's is gone...probably Carrabba's sadly.

Has anyone tried Tommy's Pizza in BridgeStreet? Heard about it on the radio and a friend told me it was very tasty, but I would like to get a second opinion about it. At $28 for a pizza it better fill me up 3 times. I heard it was a really authentic New York style pizza with good, fresh toppings.

Does anyone have a great seafood recommendation other than Landry's or Red Lobster...something outside of the box?
