Tahquitz - I think you mean Mary Jane Caylor (not Cagle).

Well, Tommy Battle won! I voted for him, but it was not for any contempt towards Mayor Spencer. I think she leaves a pretty strong legacy. Although she has raised my eyebrows a few times with some questionable decisions over the past few years. But I really just feel it's time for new leadership in our city. I look forward to seeing how far Mr. Battle can take us.

Congratulations Tommy Battle, thank you Mayor Spencer!
Tommy Battle defeated Mayor Loretta Spencer 56% to 44%, with 37,958 votes cast. Battle owes his victory to the 35803 South of Weatherly, Chapman and especially Northwest. Battle won 38 of 55 precincts. I haven't finished looking at the details, but it looks like Mayor Spencer didn't win any boxes outside of 35801 and 35802.
For City Council District 5, Will Culver defeated Richard Gipson by 53% to 47%.
For School Board District 1, Laurie McCaulley defeated Pat King by 55% to 45%.
For School Board District 5, Alta Morrison defeated Susan Currie by 53% to 47%.

Maybe it's a coincidence, but Culver's win appears to have been on racial lines - he won 53% of the vote in a District that is 53% black. Huntsville now has 2 black Councilmen out of 5 City Council members (40% with a 30% black population). This may help explain the recent push to expand the number of City Council seats to 7 or 9 (probably after the 2010 Census, but maybe sooner)...

Reactionary,
Out of curiosity, where do you get the precinct breakdowns? I'm curious to see how my precinct voted (SW Hsv-Ridgecrest Elementary).

MUNICIPAL RUN-OFF ELECTION
OCTOBER 7, 2008

Ridgecrest was #23 of 55 in number of votes. I'd be interested in getting a run from the City Clerk of numbers of Registered Voters by precinct, but they're pretty busy today. I've got the 'Election Results' loaded into XL so I can do my own analysis (yes, I'm that much of a wonk), if you want a copy...
City turnout for the run-off was 33%, up from 28% in the general election in August.
I've been hoping to see you at the Nook...

I'm surprised you haven't! I'll probably stop by tomorrow night for a cold one with a couple friends after work. Did you not make it out to the Flying Monktoberfest? If so, I would have been blasting your eardrums.

Why vote against GOP if better candidate?

I am not a big fan of Spencer, but I would vote for Loretta before I would vote for any GOP candidate. blah blah blah.

Bitter much?
And if Spencer was losing her touch as the years go by, why would you not vote for the other guy just because he's GOP? Don't you know none of that crap matters, it all depends on the person and what they want to do.
