Any nice communities where there's a park, lake, walking trails and swimming pool close by? Also, a neighboorhood like this that has (1) level homes that would be easy for accessable/mobility? Thanks....

If you're looking for a neighborhood that's specifically targeted at retirees, I think that Villas of Madison (off Hughes Rd) would qualify. The houses seem to be mainly small-ish 2 or 3 bedroom patio homes, one level, low maintenance, etc. I recall seeing a small pool and club house, but am not sure about walking trails.

If you're interested in a mixed age neighborhood, I suggest looking at JeffBentonHomes (dot com) to see their one level floorplans. They offer some attractive floorplans in the 2000 - 2800 SF range, and prices are pretty reasonable. They're building in various areas in HSV and Madison. I don't know if all of their new communities provide a pool and other amenities, but some do.

If your budget is a bit smaller, you might also consider Adams Homes. They have at least half a dozen one level floorplans that are under 2000 SF. While I can't say if they offer walking trails, some neighborhoods are near city parks and other facilities that would benefit a retiree.

One thing to consider is that most production builder houses do not offer 36 in. wide doors. Anything narrower is difficult to manage with a wheelchair (speaking from experience.) Also, look carefully at the angles, corners, and other potential obstacles to getting around. If you find a fairly open floorplan offered by a reputable builder in an area you like, it couldn't hurt to ask if the builder will modify the plan slightly to make it more accessible.

Good luck!
