Expensive? Those are pretty much your run of the mill stores that middle class people shop at. My intention isn't a put down on middle class people, btw. It's just none of the stores there are particularly expensive.

Anthropoligie is not cheap--no it isn't Dolce or Versace, but it is pricey. Your average Walmart shopper doesn't shop there. Or at J. Crews, or at Kate Spade. But there are other stores: NY and Co, Ann Taylor Loft, Chicos, to name a few, that are reasonable.

Well, I understand that, but I used to be a manager at a Gap and from my understanding, after The Summit and Riverchase, Gap brand stores (Gap, Banana Republic mainly) in Huntsville sell through their merchandise at a fast rate. It take an average of 4 weeks to sell through a flow in Huntsville.
Banana Republic, Anthropologie, and J. Crew all cater to the same base. Given the size of Huntsville and Madison, those stores are very wll within the target income bracket. Not to mention the people in Florence that travel to Huntsville for things that are not available.
I don't think shopping centers like Bridge Street cater to the Wal-Mart crowd. Some people like an upscale shopping experience. Honestly, I probably wouldn't shop at Bridge St because other than Banana and J.Crew, I like more high end stores. Stores that Alabama doesn't have.
Btw, WALMART IS EVIL!

What about in Birmingham? Are there more upper end stores there? I am a mid range shopper--just can't justify spending a boatload of money on clothes -- not anymore -- but that might change after I pay for college LOL

I heard Nordstrom is coming in 2010--a bit sooner but based on recent economic woes, who knows?

Pennyquaker09,
Garden Stae Plaza is a fabulous place to shop. I worked there as a teenager and shop there whenever I visit my mother in Bergan County. The best part about shopping there is that Jersey is a tax free state!!!!! The entire Paramus area has great shopping. I wouls love to get some of the stores here in Huntsville. My husband said I could fly to Jersey or Virginia to shop...we have loads of FF miles.
Is Riverside where Bloomingdales is located? Love Bloomingdales too!

Agree with Zenjenn...
NOT the shopping destination for me. Other than the big shoe store, there weren't any stores that appealed to me enough to go in. I've been there twice and really have no urge to go back. My husband took some out of town visitors there once, and they all enjoyed the Monaco theater, but there was little else of interest.

I'm part of the younger crowd here, and I like having a more "upscale" shopping area around. Monaco theater is a great place to catch a movie or just relax with friends. The restaurants are a tad pricey, but on the off chance I have a date I know I can bring her someplace classy other than downtown. A lot of the shops don't really apply to me, as they're more for the ladies. I like the atmosphere, and I really enjoyed the swing dances that they have there every now and then.
I don't see it as a shopping center or really something people from Birmingham should drive up to see. I remember driving to Boaz with my parents to shop, but the shops there were much more practical and numerous. It's more of a park/recreation center that just happens to have places to buy clothing.

Same here. It is highly over rated in my book. Shoe store and movie theater is all they have to offer me.
