Arab would be an excellent place to live if you worked for say DLA as most of those folks use Gate 1 I believe. If you worked for NASA then you can make better choices based upon the commute. If you worked for the Corps of Engineers, who are not even located on the Arsenal, then you would have a different decision. That said I would either wait until a job is offered, save the office as a favorite in the GPS and consider different locations relative to that favorite. Or if you are a planning type I would calculate probable offices based upon the type of jobs. Engineering openings are mostly at MDA, for example. For Admin Support I think you will find openings at MDA and Army at the VBC and Sparkman office complexes.

The job is with RDECOM - does that narrow it down? Joe works with solid fuel rockets, pyrotechnics engineering, etc. The job is hands on, making test stands, testing stuff. Boys blowing things up, I like to call it! LOL

There are plenty of good neighborhoods and areas in Huntsville and Madison and you're husband will most likely not be any further than about 15 minutes from work. If you are not looking for rural living I would not recommend places like Arab or Priceville. They are a little isolated and in dry counties too if that matters. (man, alcohol laws come up a lot on here...haha)

By the way, sounds like you are currently living in the Aberdeen, MD area? I used to live there and commuted to Baltimore for work. You and your hubby will find traffic in the Huntsville area to be a joke next to that mess. There are very nice neighborhoods in South Huntsville and Madison with very few traffic lights between them and the gates of RSA. With a $1000 housing budget you can do quite well here.

Thanks for the input! Yes, we're in Harford County, MD right now, husband works at the Edgewood campus of APG. I haven't even bothered trying to get a job in Baltimore - I was offered one in Towson and tested out the drive - NO way I was doing that every day.

We don't care about dry counties, but I am torn between wanting to be near "civilization" and my love of the country. Honestly, the subdivisions all have such big lots in the area, from what I've seen so far, we'll probably feel like we're in the country in the middle of town.

I am getting too excited - who knows if this will happen. Gotta go light a candle...

I would not want to make a recomendation based upon this. Given a job of this nature it is entirely possible he will be in one of the smaller buildings located closer to gate 1 where there is more space and live fire - or he could be in a large office complex best accessed from gate 9. The point being while the masses work in large buildings there are 100s of smaller buildings arround the arsenal.

Either way Huntsville is a great place and the drive is easy.

Ginny-- I noticed today that if you go to the City-Data classifieds at the bottom of this web site, someone has posted a 2 bedroom home for rent near Redstone in Huntsville for $650 per month.

Blossomwood - City South - Close -Older Homes- Homes bring the $
South East Huntsville - City...Closest mostly older homes..Best Value (My Opinion)
Hampton Cove - City...Have to cross mountain (Traffic)...New homes
Monrovia...County...More Travel..New Homes
New market...County..More Travel...New Homes
Hazel Green/Meridianville..More Travle...Traffic..New Homes
Other Counties....Marshall/Limestone/Morgan/Tennessee..Even More Travel

Lived here all my life...Lived in Hazel green, Monrovia, Meridianville, and wife lived here childhood in New Market. We moved to Jones Valley this past year and bought older home. Not as grand as our Monster in Monrovia but bought cheaper and updated..Oh yea..has a bigger lot! .75 acre and 3350 ft.. 90% People comming will start the above list with hampton cove and move down. These are al great areas but do your homework. Our house to 5400 at Redstone...9 minutes (2 lights). Schools in my area...at least elementary...will not be beat anywhere in this county (Public). Oh and one last thing...eating out & shopping....Its all within 2 miles or less.

You will love Huntsville once you get here and settled in. Its a great place to grow up, raise kids, or retire.

You can update (edit) a post for up to (I think) 96 minutes or something like that as an alternative to creating a new post.
