High speed internet in Arab and other rural areas
Hi everyone,
We saw some property in Arab we really liked, but I can't live without high speed internet access.
What is available there, and are there any areas in or around Huntsville / Decatur where access is a problem?

You have 2 choices in Arab for internet service. Charter cable and Otelco (DSL) both offer internet services. I have Otelco and have been satisfied with their services. I have called when I have had a problem and they come right out usually within the hour.
If you have any questions about Arab, I will be happy to answer. I have lived here 3 years.

You might also check out Bama Wisp. I am not sure if they offer in Arab or not. They offer high speed internet but its wireless. Supposed to be just as fast as cable or DSL. Its for more of the rural areas that do not get broadband internet already.

They aren't in Arab. As far as I know you have 2 choices for now. I looked on BamaWisp website to be sure and they do not cover Marshall county

Be cautious if this is a priority for you as you get out in the country. I have cable high speed internet, but just down the road half a mile they do not. End of the line, I guess. So you could honestly say the area has it, but not be able to get it at your house.
This is the #1 question I get about my house!

That's interesting. We are traveling in a motorhome and tought of looking in the general area. For now we get our internet through a Verizon modem with its own phone number. This has worked very well, and adequately fast for us, but how is Verizon cell coverage in the Arab area. Anybody know?

You should have coverage in Arab, my son had verizon in FL and used it up here. I checked their coverage map just to be sure, of course I can't guarantee how fast their internet is here.

Just moved to Harvest and the choices for high speed internet are Knology and MediaCom. Cable guy comes tomorrow so I will post my review at a later date on service and speed, etc., but I can say that their package for internet & cable TV (not including phone) was less than HALF of what Knology quoted me, and Knology was also a week later for installation.

Since we are not at our home in Guntersville full time I haven't had any cable or internet service but I understand Charter serves Guntersville, does anyone know of any other companies? I looked up that Mediacom on line but it says they do not serve my zip code, 35976. I sure hope there is at least one more to choose from.

Charter is it unless you go with DirectTV. Charter just increased prices, they are really high for what you get IMHO. I have HD and the basic plus which includes HBO with a DVR recorder and it went up to $118 a month. I had cable, phone and internet in FL for less than $100 a month , here I only have cable and they don't offer phone here. Competition is a good thing when it comes to cable.
DirectTV doesn't have some of the channels I like so I have stayed with Charter.
OtelCO said they are going to start offering cable in Arab, so hopefully it will help if there is a competitor. If not, I am going to have change to Direct TV
I heard they had tried to get other cable companies but they won't come because there are not enough ppl.
