I guess we should be hoping the BRAC jobs get here sooner than later so those getting layed off might have a chance to have opportunities with the BRAC, but I think the timing might not support it. Hopefully there will be other work here in Huntsville.
Not sure what the skill set of those getting layed off will be. Engineers, Manufacturing, Management, corporate support (HR, site services, etc).
Hopefully as more information becomes available, people will update this thread.

So much for this great city with supposedly 5000-100,000 jobs coming here over the next couple of years depending on who you ask. We will be lucky to maintain what we have.. BRAC seems very unlikely like it's been described. Huntsville people tend to exaggerate everything.

I haven't heard too much about BRAC being reduced, maybe delayed a bit due to the housing thing. But even if it is cut in half, say 2500 jobs, that's a lot of jobs. The thing is, we keep hearing 2011, 2012, etc - may be too late for people getting hit now.
Still, how many other medium sized towns are at least being told they will be getting tons of jobs? (Actually, maybe Mobile with the tanker thing and/or rumors of a redesigned 777.)

100,000?!? We'll be lucky to see a few thousand the way Obama is headed. Anyway, I think those BRAC jobs are government jobs, so civilian contracters may not be able to easily move into those jobs. Plus, they will come too late for those getting cut now. I know if I lost my job, I would not be able to wait for BRAC. I would need work quickly or face foreclosure so I would have to start sending resumes out all over the country.

Different jobs, different classification of engineers.

I am sure all will be affected but 25 yrs in this industry I have not yet see management voluntarily lay itself off.

Do you think the North Korean threats will make a difference to the MDA program?

One would think that Missile Defense is very important now with the moves that North Korea is making, but I really think that Obama is more concerned about paying for his socialist agenda than anything else, and will cut defense to pay for it. Remember that Bill Clinton systematically dismantled our nation's armed forces while he was president.

Wait, you are complaining about Obama's "socialist agenda", yet you are complaining because he is making cuts that will affect corporate-socialism? Playing devil's advocate here, but it is not the government's problem if these industries revenues depend so heavily on public funding. Don't blame your government, blame Boeing.

By law, all moves from the 2005 BRAC must be completed by 15 September, 2011.
Of course, that only means that the positions must be moved by then. MDA may have a lot of vacancies on that date.
Given SECDEF direction on increasing the government workforce and decreasing contractor workforce, the number of MDA government jobs coming to town will likely substantially increase rather than decrease. However, the anticipated large number of contractor jobs coming to town may indeed be evaporating before our eyes.
Materiel Command should not be overlooked either - they are subject to the same statutory date and there is no reason to expect their number of jobs to be impacted by the new administration's policies.
