This industry was created because of this nation's need for a strong defense, the very protection you've enjoyed to date including your freedom of speech. The fact that you're not speaking German or Russian, you can thank a veternan, and the men & women who work behind the line to support our military. Yes that include what you called a 'corporate-socialism' of aerospace & defense industry.

You're a latina and you or your ancestry chose to come to this country because what it offers. Don't mock the people who helped created & protected the very freedom that you enjoy.

I was discussing the irony of the last poster for criticizing the President for the "socialist agenda", yet his cuts will affect industries that are nothing but that. Please enlighten me, but does Boeing do anything else? refrigerators? cell phones? light bulbs?
Mocking? Please spare me the cliché speech about "my freedom of speech rights being defended". Are we (and yes "we") defending our country from our enemies or just sending our men to fight inane wars just to keep these industries strong? Didn't the Founding Fathers think about that when they wrote Article 1, Section 8, Clause 12 of the Constitution? Was Eisenhower mocking the military-defense industry when he gave his last speech? See, as of lately, you cannot question these topics on this country otherwise you are "mocking something" or not being a "patriot" or you are not "American enough". Were Eisenhower or the Founding Fathers wrong?

Anyways, now that you bring my ancestry to the table; I chose to come to this country just because it is easy for me to enter here. I was BORN an American citizen. My ancestors were given citizenship so they could go draft island men for WWI (Jones Act 1917) and my island was war bounty (Spanish-American War 1898...which might explain why I am not speaking "German or Russian"). And hey, believe me, I love the military (was even part of the AFROTC) but our country (yes OUR) has a strong Defense system just because we do love our Monroe Doctrine; not because we are so cool with rights (when we were liberating Europe from the nazis, black people on our very own country were third class citizens).

Um, they dominate the commercial airliner market? And sell commercial aircraft parts all over the world?

Let me help you out LivingInMadison: In addition to commercial airliners, Boeing does business aircrafts, rotorcrafts, fighter crafts, satilites, Information Systems, Launch vehicles, Ground Based vehicles, Capital Investments and Financials, and much more.

And companies like Boeing (including LM, Northrup and a few of the other large aerospace outfits) typically split their products between, commercial, private, and goverment revenue streams. Boeing typically has a 50/50 split between private/government and commericial.

600 is a significant number, maybe not to general pool of (tens) thousands of engineers, but still... it adds up (Continental before, and Boeing now)

DRS lays off 'less than 10 percent' of its Huntsville work force - Breaking News from The Huntsville Times - al.com

Maybe we should start out a dedicated thread for the layoffs in Hsv and tally up the numbers - and post the source too, be it a link to local media, or "horse's mouth"

More info on this GMD budget cut fall out.

Just shows you this affects beyond Huntsville. Boeing GMD in Anaheim is expecting upto 50% personnel cut. 2 Senior Managers have already been 'down graded' to grunts, reducing office size to cubicles, in anticipating the manpower reduction.

Talk about setting up a big ol' strawman...

Since we are talking about layoffs of private sector contractors here, not actual soldiers, shouldn't those be pictures of a bunch of guys drinking coffee in their cubicle, going to yet another staff meeting or writing some computer code?

Do not insult the soldiers who are actually sacrificing for our country by comparing them to some desk jockey engineer at Boeing in Huntsville. I understand the need for a strong defense industry. But everyone, including myself, that works in this industry knows there is a huge amount of waste. It is accepted as part of the industry. They talk about it amongst themselves but of course would never admit it when they are begging the government for more money.

I feel for anyone that loses their job. I have friends that have lost their jobs in the past few months. It is hard on a family. Regardless, in Huntsville, we have been lucky so far. Other areas are being/will be hit much harder. A lot of this is a necessary correction for the past decade or so. We are all going to have to suffer a little for a while I have a feeling.
